Description
Our lovely tortoise, Nigel, needs a new home due to personal circumstances. We say he is a ‘he’, although until ‘he’ is about 5 years old (or about 6” in length) we will not know his gender, so he could turn out to be Nigella, or Nigelina!
We have taken great care to house Nigel appropriately, following best practice for the species: tortoise table (not vivarium), fresh weeds and flowers according to The Tortoise Table, supplemented with safe, shop bought greens when weeds are not abundant. Appropriate UVA & UVB bulbs, positioned at the correct height. 50:50 mix of coco coir and tortoise-safe graded soil, kept with the correct level of moisture. Bulbs are on a digital dimming thermostat. You can see we have a cover for the table (we also have cats!), and we also have the legs for the table if you’d like them. Until he is about 5 years old he should have a warm shallow soak around three times a week - helps to keep his hydration levels correct. We have calcium dust to sprinkle on his food. Ocasional sprinkle of Nutrabol for vitamins. We also have some cuttlefish he can have a chomp on, and this can stay in the enclosure the whole time (helps to keep his beak from overgrowing). Feeding is a half shell-sized amount of safe fresh weeds/flowers daily. Overfeeding and not having correct temps/moisture/UVB can result in MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease), or pyramiding, which is where the shell grows too fast and pointy - we would love his new home to understand these needs please.
We are looking for a new home where the people will be willing to continue with his best care, and hopefully someone who can provide a safely enclosed outdoor tortoise run to give him the best life possible. We are happy to point you to the guides we have followed as they are so useful. The current table is fine for now, but he has grown well in the two years we have had him - he would benefit from a larger table once he is settled. A converted Ikea Billy bookcase lined with pond liner is both economical and ideal!
If you think Nigel is the tortoise you need in your life then please do get in touch. He has a great character, and it’s so much fun to see him stomp around and munch on a flower you hold out for him. He loves a supervised stomp around the garden.
The price we are asking is far less than the overall setup cost you would have when starting out with any young tortoise if you are to do it well. It also lets us know that you are taking his health and happiness as seriously as we have done. We have the official paperwork that you need to legally keep a Hermann Tortoise, including his registered microchip, and can transfer ownership to you once we meet to rehome.
We look forward to meeting you!
