The Firecracker Cichlid (Tropheus sp. 'Red' Moliro), or Moliro Tropheus, is a vibrant, active African cichlid from Lake Tanganyika known for its intense red/orange coloration and bold black markings. They are aggressive, herbivorous fish that grow to 5 inches and require high-fiber diets, hard alkaline water, and large tanks (>30–55 gallons).
Key Care Requirements:
Origin: Rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika.
Temperament: Highly aggressive/territorial; best kept in large groups (6–8+) to disperse aggression.
Diet: High-fiber herbivore. Feed algae-based flakes/pellets, avoiding high-protein food to prevent bloating.
Water Conditions: Temperature 25–27°C - pH 8.2–9.0.
Tank Setup: Minimum 30–55 gallons with ample rockwork, caves, and plenty of swimming space.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooders; often deemed one of the easier Tropheus to breed.
These fish are notoriously active and, while often kept with other robust Tanganyikan cichlids, are best kept in species-only tanks.
