Chico is an approximately 9-month-old Miniature Poodle, currently being fostered in Gloucestershire in an adult home with other dogs.
Chico came into rescue with five other dogs from a breeder who has now stopped breeding. He has come from a very sheltered background and, aside from living with multiple dogs, has had little to no experience of the outside world.

When Chico arrived, he was very thin. After having him for a few weeks, it became clear why — one of the dogs he lived with, Ray (who came from the same group), would push him away from food, and Chico would simply walk off. He is now fed four small meals a day, and the difference is already noticeable. He absolutely loves his food and is gaining condition well.
Chico was extremely timid when he first came in — very flighty, skittish, and would dodge affection. He was comfortable with Ray, whom he already knew, but was very frightened of the other dogs in the home. With slow, careful exposure each day, his confidence has grown, and he is now much more settled and comfortable around them.

His bond with his foster carer has also developed beautifully. He now seeks affection, enjoys being close, and likes to know where you are. Most wonderfully, we are starting to see joy in Chico — he has begun playing with toys, and he and Ray enjoy gentle play together.

Chico’s experiences outside the home have been introduced gradually. He is learning to walk on a lead and has started short walks. While still nervous, he improves every time. From initially refusing to walk at all, he is now trotting along beside his foster brother — a huge achievement for him.

On one of these walks, Chico visited another foster carer and was reunited with Hansel, one of the dogs he came into rescue with. His reaction was incredibly heart-warming — tail wagging, kisses, excitement, and within minutes he was playing and racing around the garden. It was lovely to see him relaxed and simply being the dog he should be.

Chico travels well in the car, crated with Ray, and has no issues with this. He goes daily to a secure field for off-lead exercise. This was initially overwhelming, but he is now starting to relax and enjoy it. However, he can still be easily frightened — on one occasion, two Labrador dogs ran over unexpectedly, and Chico was terrified. He is a significant flight risk if scared, so a secure environment is essential.
At home, Chico sleeps in the utility room with Ray and settles well. He is clean overnight and will toilet as soon as taken outside. House training is progressing well but is still a work in progress and will need continued consistency.

Chico has met other dogs unfamiliar to him, and with gentle, calm introductions, he copes much better each time. He has been fully health-checked, vaccinated, and seen by the vet, he has had treatment for an ear infection and ear mites.

We will continue working with Chico, and we know he will keep making small but meaningful steps every day. In fact, we are confident that if this profile were updated in a week, it would already tell a slightly different — and even more positive — story.
Chico has the sweetest temperament and not a nasty bone in his body — all of his reactions come from fear and lack of experience, never aggression.
Chico will need a very special home.
He is looking for experienced adopters who understand ex-breeding dogs or unsocialised, nervous dogs. Chico is still very young and has a truly lovely temperament. His cheeky side is there and emerging more each day, but placed with the wrong people — those who don’t understand dogs like him — he could easily regress.
His ideal home would be:
A quiet, adult-only household
With one or more calm, gentle dogs
Dogs who will give him space initially but allow him to grow into the playful puppy he is meant to be
Potential adopters must also understand grooming breeds and the ongoing commitment and expense that comes with them.
Chico will be neutered before leaving us. As his exact date of birth is unknown (he was not microchipped when he came into rescue), he will not be homed with entire dogs.
If you feel you could offer Chico the patient, understanding home he needs, please email us to request an adoption questionnaire at:
