💛 Brownie’s Story
Brownie is Trixie’s brother, and if you’ve been following her journey on our YT channel, Golden Kobe Family, you may recognise some similarities between these two!
Brownie and his siblings had an incredibly sheltered start to life in Macedonia and sadly missed out on many of the normal experiences and socialisation puppies need to grow into confident adult dogs.
As a result, Brownie has grown into a sensitive and cautious boy who is still learning that the world around him is safe.
Brownie has always been the most fearful of his siblings. His sisters would approach for treats while Brownie often felt too frightened to, but since arriving into foster with us he is doing SO well and coming out of his shell more and more every day.
He is such a gentle, sweet boy who really wants to trust, and we’re starting to see more of who he really is underneath those nerves. 💛
💛 PERSONALITY
Brownie is gentle, observant and very clever.
Rather than involving himself straight away in something unfamiliar, he likes to stand back, watch and work things out first. He follows the other dogs’ lead, watches us humans and takes a lot of reassurance from his surroundings and dogs.
He is naturally cautious around sudden movements, so if you jump up quickly or move erratically he’ll give himself some distance and observe. When things are calm and predictable, however, he’s becoming much more comfortable coming close to us.
He now enjoys sitting with me (Ella) in the kitchen, having a chew and just being part of what’s going on. He snoozes both inside and outside his crate and is becoming much more relaxed around everyday life.
After some bonding and confidence work, he now takes treats directly from our hands, knows his name and comes alive when the JR pâté appears. 😂
We’ve also been doing confidence training with our behaviourist and he LOVES it. He’s incredibly clever, picks things up quickly and seems to really enjoy having something to work out. His confidence is increasing all the time and he genuinely seems to get braver by the day.
And we’re seeing a very cheeky little side appear too...
When he thinks nobody is looking, Brownie likes collecting random items from around the house and taking them back to his safe space like his own little stash. 😂
We did lose a dog food scooper overnight. Brownie kindly remodelled it for us haha!
🍗 FOOD = THE WAY TO HIS HEART
Chicken and JR pâté have been absolutely brilliant for helping Brownie build positive associations with us and encouraging him to make those brave little choices.
He’s becoming more food motivated as his confidence grows and it makes training with him really enjoyable.
Positive, reward based training will be incredibly important for Brownie going forward. We want his future family to continue showing him that people, new experiences and everyday life can lead to good things, without forcing him into situations before he’s ready.
The work we’ve been doing with our behaviourist has given us a really lovely insight into how clever he is and how much he enjoys learning, and we’ll be able to pass what we’ve learnt onto his future family too.
🐕 OTHER DOGS
Brownie can be homed with another friendly, confident resident dog, he watches what they do and takes reassurance from them.
If the other dogs are relaxed, Brownie can see that there’s probably nothing to worry about.
🏡 HOME LIFE
Brownie learns routines really quickly and seems to thrive when life is calm and predictable.
His crate is his safe spot and he genuinely enjoys it. He’ll happily snooze inside it, but he’s now choosing to snooze outside it too, spend time with us in the kitchen and become more involved in normal family life.
He still needs access to his crate or another safe space where he knows he can retreat and won’t be disturbed.
We never want to force interaction with Brownie. Giving him choice has been really important for his progress. We let him watch, work things out and decide when he feels brave enough to join us.
And increasingly, he is choosing to join us. 💛
