Description
Meet Ferran – A Chocolate Pointer Boy
Age: Approximately 12 months
Location: Looking for his forever home in the UK. Ferran will be fostered in Gloucestershire.
If you go to our website there is lots of videos on it of him with me.
I visit Spain twice a year to work with a rescue charity that Starfish has supported for 15 years. At Starfish, we only put dogs up for adoption that I have met personally and would be happy to welcome into my own home with my dogs, or into one of our experienced foster homes. Ferran is one of those dogs.
Ferran’s story
Ferran and his brother were found abandoned on an urbanisation, both in a terrible state. Sadly, dogs are regularly dumped in these areas in Spain, often because people know they are likely to be found. Unfortunately, frightened dogs can run off and end up on nearby motorways, with tragic consequences.
Thankfully, Ferran and his brother were rescued. His brother has since found a home and is doing really well, and now it’s this lovely lad’s turn to find his own family.
Getting to know Ferran
When I first met Ferran, I thought he was a lovely boy, but I wanted to spend more time with him and see how he coped outside the rescue centre. So, I took him out for an adventure with another dog. This was the first time anyone had taken him out, and I was really pleased with how he managed it all.
He was a little reluctant to get into the car at first, so we popped him in the back with Tessa. It was only a short journey to a nearby urbanisation, where there was plenty going on, and he soon settled.
Once we arrived, his little head was everywhere! What’s that? Who’s that? What’s happening over there? He was taking it all in, just as you might expect a young dog to do when experiencing so many new things for the first time. He wasn't particularly frightened, but neither was he overly confident. He was simply curious about the world around him, and I thought he did brilliantly for his first outing.
We visited the charity shop, where he met lots of different people and dogs, before heading to a café for a coffee and a spot of lunch.
One thing I learnt very quickly about Ferran is that he is a lover, not a fighter. A little dog growled at him, and he looked at me as if to say, “What did she do that for?”! She might have been tiny compared with him, but he completely respected her telling him she didn't want his big nose in her face. He wasn't interested in making a fuss; he simply took the hint.
At the café, he settled down remarkably well. I suspect that if I hadn't been quick enough, he might have helped himself to my lunch! It had all been such a busy morning for him that he eventually started falling asleep sitting up, only to wake himself up again. I managed to get a video of this, which says so much about his sweet, goofy nature.
On the journey back to the rescue centre, he was a completely different dog in the car. Having experienced so much, he was happy to settle down and go to sleep.
When we arrived back, he was pleased to see all his familiar friends again.
What sort of home does Ferran need?
Having spent more time with him and watched him around other dogs, I really do think Ferran is a darling boy. He is very much still a baby in many ways, rather than one of those dogs who wants to be top dog. If there is any sign of trouble, he simply walks away. Not in a frightened way; he just isn't interested in confrontation.
He is a friendly, happy-go-lucky big goofball who has so much to learn about the world, and I haven't seen any obvious red flags during the time I have spent with him.
That said, Ferran is still a young Pointer, and prospective adopters need to understand the breed. Pointers are active, athletic dogs with a strong hunting instinct and potentially significant prey drive. They need plenty of exercise, opportunities to use their noses and brains, and a family who will enjoy giving them an active and interesting life.
Ferran will need training, socialisation and help getting used to everyday life in a home. He hasn't grown up in a typical family environment, so there will be lots of things he needs to learn. The encouraging thing is that he seems to pick things up quite quickly. He isn't particularly nervous, and his curiosity helps him take new experiences in his stride.
We are looking for an experienced home, ideally with previous Pointer experience or someone who has successfully helped a rescue dog learn the basics from scratch.
He will need patient people who understand that he is still young and will need guidance, consistency and time to mature.
Ferran has been neutered and is up to date with his vaccinations. We will also arrange his blood tests before he travels to the UK.
Ferran is a lovely, sociable young dog who deserves the chance to discover just how wonderful life in a family can be. If you have experience of the Pointer breed, enjoy an active outdoor life and have the time and patience to help him learn, we would love to hear from you.
