Description
Basil is a 9 year old British longhair. He was abandoned & left to fend for himself. A kind group of neighbours found him trying to fight off the foxes and badgers for scraps, covered in ticks and matts :0( None of the usual cat rescue centres had availability so we were asked to have him.
Basil has been with us for 2 years. He is microchipped, vaccinations up to date, health checked, flea & wormer up to date. We have him professionally groomed due to his incredible coat. We started off having him groomed every 8 weeks, however the groomer has said it should be every 3-4 months instead as his coat is in such fantastic condition now.
That being said, he adores being groomed (as soon as he hears his brush draw being opened, he sprints downstairs for a brush), so if you regularly brush him yourself he won’t need to have professional grooms unless you want him to.
Basil is phenomenally intelligent and an extremely easy cat. He is fully house trained & only uses his litter box. Once he is bonded to you he can be let out & will not roam far at all.
Basil is car savvy, road savvy, cat savvy & dog savvy but his preference is to be the only pet. We have 2 dogs & he is incredible with them, but it makes him anxious when they bark & we do feel he would benefit from being the only pet. He would not be suitable to be rehomed with another cat as he is likely to fight them, but he is ok with our neighbourhood cats.
Basil currently lives on a farm. He has a very high prey drive, so he would be great for pest control, but I keep him separate from our chickens just incase! He has never tried to venture into their garden, I think he knows it would be too much temptation for him & he really does try to fit in with his family.
Basil is VERY partial to an older lady. He is obsessed with my mother & aunts. He enjoys his quiet time but he also really likes company & is happiest curled up next to you or on your lap. Basil is a BIG BOY. It says British Longhair on his microchip but the vets think he has Maine Coon in him which I would agree with.
When we were asked to look after Basil we were told he was an outdoor only cat who didn’t like venturing inside. That was true at the time, but is not the case now at all!!! He does like to sit in the garden for a short while, but he gets anxious when we shut the door & likes to be with us or on the sofa at all times. I think likely a bit of anxiety from being abandoned by his previous owner.
Basil is very chatty & will have a full conversation with you in meows if you would like. He will let you know when it’s time for another pouch.
Basil’s ideal home would be a retired person or couple who live a relatively quiet life, want just one pet & have lots of love to give. He is absolutely fine if you go out for the day & will just snooze on a chair or in front of the fire, but he gets anxious if left overnight, so that wouldn’t be suitable.
We are in no rush to rehome Basil & will only let him go to a good, loving & suitable home.
