Crowley is a gorgeous, funny, affectionate and extremely clever 13-month-old Labrador × German Wirehaired Pointer who I'm looking to find a more suitable home for. This is an incredibly difficult decision and I'm not looking to rehome him to just anyone. Finding someone who genuinely understands and enjoys working-breed dogs is much more important to me than finding a home quickly. Crowley is around 28kg, microchipped and fully vaccinated, with his next vaccinations due in October. He is entire following veterinary advice to delay neutering until at least 18 months or until his arousal is better controlled. He's very people-oriented, playful and incredibly quick to learn. He knows sit, down, wait, leave it, heel, settle, stand and paw, is house-trained, crate trained, travels well in the car and is comfortable sleeping independently. He loves toys and chews and is an incredibly silly, affectionate dog when relaxed. He's also a dog who struggles significantly with arousal and regulating himself. When overstimulated he can become very excitable and vocal, jump up, pace, struggle to settle and find it difficult to respond to cues that he knows perfectly well when calm. Because of this, he needs a quieter, structured environment with someone experienced with high-drive or working breeds who understands that simply giving him more exercise isn't necessarily the answer. Crowley has had incidents of mouthing when extremely over-aroused or frustrated. He has not broken skin, but I want to be completely transparent about this and I would not consider a home with children. His new owner needs to be comfortable managing this responsibly and continuing to work on his regulation and behaviour. He has been examined by a vet, who did not identify a physical cause for his arousal. Crowley has consistently been gentle and curious around other animals. He calmly watches birds and cats without barking, growling or attempting to chase them, and has lived alongside a hamster whom he watches with quiet curiosity. He once encountered an injured pigeon and simply followed it around sniffing it, much to the pigeon's annoyance! Introductions to any resident animals would of course still need to be managed carefully. Crowley is very sociable with other dogs and has previously done particularly well spending time with a calm, well-adjusted dog. They would play together but also settle and relax companionably, and Crowley seemed to benefit from his company. For that reason, I would be very open to a home with an existing steady, dog-friendly adult dog if they were a good match. Any resident dog would need to meet Crowley first to make sure they were comfortable together. He is very affectionate and loves being close to his person, but also benefits enormously from quiet time and proper uninterrupted sleep. He is capable of being a beautifully calm and cuddly dog when his environment and nervous system are right; he simply needs considerably more consistency and behavioural support than I'm able to sustainably provide. I'm happy to be completely open with potential adopters about his history, routine, behaviour and the management strategies we've found helpful. His ideal home would be an experienced adult home, preferably with working-breed experience, a secure garden and someone with the time and knowledge to work with him. I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have successfully owned high-drive or high-arousal dogs before. Crowley will go to his new home with everything he needs, including his crate and bedding, blankets, harness and leads, food and water bowls, approximately 12kg of his current food, treats, toys, Kongs and five months of his current flea and worming treatment. I want him to have as many familiar things as possible around him while he settles into his new home. There will be a rehoming fee and I will want to speak with potential owners and arrange meetings before making a decision. Finding the right home is the priority.
