AMERICAN AKITA — 9 YEAR OLD MALE — SEEKING AN EXPERIENCED ADOPTIVE HOME 📍 Teesside area About him Ragnar is a nine year old male American Akita. He's a big, handsome, affectionate lad who's spent his whole life as a family dog. He's loyal, gentle with the people he knows, and past the daft years now — a couple of good walks a day and then he's happy to settle at home with you. He's brilliant with children and gets on well with other dogs. He's not suited to a home with cats. The honest part — please read before enquiring Over the last few weeks he's developed separation-related distress. This is completely new. He was fine being left alone for years before this, with no history of it at all. When left, he's paced, panted, been unable to settle, and caused damage in the house — including to flooring, carpet and blinds. On one occasion he attempted to get out of an upstairs window. He's stayed wound up for hours afterwards. This has happened after being left for as little as an hour. I'm telling you all of this upfront because I'd rather find one right home than ten wrong ones. What's being done about it He's been seen by a vet and is on medication for it. I've also been working with Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust, whose national coordinator has been advising me directly. Her view is that the sudden onset points to a trigger rather than a permanent behavioural problem, and we've been working through possible causes. That's included removing scented candles and air fresheners from the house, airing out recent decorating, and using pheromone diffusers and calming sprays. He's also entire, and neutering is being discussed with my vet — an unneutered male can detect a bitch in season from a considerable distance, which causes real frustration and a strong drive to escape, and may well explain the timing of all this. In other words: this is being treated as something with a cause and a possible fix, not written off. Details 9 years old, male Not currently neutered Microchipped No other known health issues Under veterinary care, on medication Good with children ✅ Good with other dogs ✅ Not suited to homes with cats ❌ The home he needs Someone experienced with Akitas or large guarding breeds. This is not a first-time dog. Someone home most of the day, at least while he settles — not a household where everyone is out at work. A secure home and garden, including upstairs windows. No cats. Someone willing to continue his medication, work with a vet, and see the ongoing plan through. Ideally someone prepared to take things slowly — a couple of meetings before he moves, rather than a straight handover. A dog with separation anxiety settles far better with a gradual introduction. Why I'm doing this I've returned to work and can't be with him during the day. I've spent several weeks trying every route I could — I've contacted twelve rescues and charities, and none have had capacity. I've had him vet-assessed and medicated, and I've been following breed-specific advice throughout. He's not being given up on. I want him somewhere he can be properly looked after by someone who has the time and the experience that he needs right now. Adoption, not sale. Pet home only — not for breeding.
