Basic Care
Enclosure:
These babies are extremely small, so they need a small, secure enclosure to start with. A large vivarium is not suitable at this size as they can struggle to find food and are much more likely to escape. They can squeeze through incredibly small gaps, so secure ventilation and doors are essential.
As they grow, they can be moved into a larger planted enclosure.
Temperature & humidity:
Mourning Geckos are a tropical species and require warm, humid conditions with good ventilation. Regular misting helps maintain humidity and provides drinking droplets. The enclosure should be allowed to dry slightly between misting rather than remaining constantly wet.
Diet:
Despite their tiny size, these are active little hunters. Babies can be offered appropriately sized foods such as fruit flies and other tiny feeder insects, along with a suitable powdered gecko diet.
All live food should be appropriately sized, gut-loaded and supplemented with suitable calcium and vitamins.
Decor:
Provide plenty of fine foliage, climbing surfaces and hiding places. Plants, cork, small branches and other suitable furnishings will give them plenty to explore and help them feel secure.
A fascinating little species
Mourning Geckos are great for adults and older children who are interested in reptiles, planted vivariums and observing natural behaviour. They are not really a handling species due to their incredibly small size and speed, but they are fascinating to watch.
They are active little geckos and can often be seen climbing, hunting and exploring their enclosure.
