It breaks my heart to write this, but after almost four years with Boba, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to find him a new home.
Boba is a 3 year 10 month old male Cockapoo × Cocker Spaniel. His mum is a Cockapoo and his dad is a Cocker Spaniel. He is KC registered, microchipped and hereditary clear. He has been a much-loved part of our family since he was a puppy.
This is absolutely not a decision we have made lightly. Since having our baby, we have realised that we simply cannot give Boba the time, attention and lifestyle he deserves anymore. He is a wonderful dog, but he is a lot of dog, and his needs and behaviour have become too difficult for us to manage alongside having a baby.
Boba’s personality
Boba is genuinely the most loyal dog. He will be your absolute shadow and wants to follow you everywhere … even to the toilet! He will happily lie outside the bathroom door and wait for you to come back out. He loves being with his person and being involved in everyday life.
He is incredibly affectionate and loves cuddles and lots of attention. He is such a beautiful boy inside and out, and it is honestly heartbreaking for us to have to make this decision.
He has brilliant recall and will come straight back to his name or “here”. He absolutely loves being outside and would thrive with someone who enjoys long walks, beaches, countryside and fields. He loves playing fetch and could happily spend ages playing.
Before having our baby, he slept on our bed, but he is also completely used to sleeping downstairs in his own bed, so either would be fine depending on his new owner’s preference.
He is a very clever boy and knows lots of commands including sit, lie down, spin, paw, jump and high five, recall to his name or here and ‘walk’ with pointing to your side he will stay next to you. He knows wait and is very good at this. (E.g, ‘here’ then ‘wait’ while you take his lead off and he will wait until you say ‘go!’ Also knows ‘this way’. He is very food motivated and some of his favourite words are “chicken” (which he absolutely LOVES!), “eggs” especially scrambled “walk” and “treat”!
He currently eats Harringtons dog food but also really enjoys Royal Canin.
His behaviour
Boba can get very excitable around other dogs and will bark a lot, but he is not aggressive towards them. He enjoys being around dogs but can become very enthusiastic and vocal.
Boba can also be very nervous around new people and can take some time to settle and feel comfortable with someone he doesn’t know. He reacts strongly to people arriving at the house. Knocking at the door or the sound of our Ring doorbell will cause him to jump up, bark and rush to the door.
The main difficulty we have is his behaviour around people leaving the house without him. Things such as keys, getting ready to leave or certain things associated with going out can make him extremely excited. He can run downstairs, bark, jump up and mouth at clothing/people.
He does listen to commands and will go to his bed when told, but managing these situations has become too much for us alongside having a baby.
He is also sensitive around his ears and can growl if they are handled, so his new owner would need to be understanding of this and comfortable managing him appropriately. I have groomed him myself with no issues, he has been to groomer once. He is very good being bathed and blow dried.
The home we’re looking for
We are looking for a very specific home for Boba. Ideally someone who genuinely enjoys walking and has plenty of time for a dog who loves companionship and attention.
A couple, individual or someone whose partner works away could be a great fit. I actually got Boba when my own partner was in the forces, and Boba was an amazing companion for me. He really loves having someone around and being part of their everyday life.
He would suit someone who wants a loyal companion who will be by their side constantly, enjoys long walks and adventures, but also loves having a dog curled up beside them at home.
Because of his behaviour and the fact that we now have a young baby, we are looking for an adult-only home with no young children.
We will be completely honest with anyone interested about Boba’s behaviour and needs. We want to take our time and make absolutely sure that he goes to the right home rather than simply choosing the first person who enquires.
This is heartbreaking for us, but ultimately we want Boba to have the life he deserves. He is the most loyal, beautiful and loving dog, and we want to find someone who will love him just as much as we do.
