Description
Whisky is a handsome 3-year-old Golden Retriever looking for a loving, experienced and committed forever home.
The reason we are looking to rehome Whisky is the arrival of our baby. We recently welcomed our baby girl, and despite trying very hard to make things work, we have come to the heartbreaking decision that Whisky and a young child cannot safely share our home. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. Whisky is a much-loved member of our family, and finding the right home for him is incredibly important to us.
Whisky is a very affectionate, loving and people-oriented dog. He loves adults, attention and being involved with his family. He is playful, funny, energetic and has a big personality. He loves walks, exploring, playing, puddles and streams. He is generally good with other dogs when out on walks.
However, Whisky is a very energetic, impulsive and strong 38 kg dog who can be challenging to manage. He needs an experienced owner who is confident with large, high-energy dogs.
He is not suitable for a home with young children. He is not an aggressive dog, but he can be impulsive and does not always respond appropriately around children. Because of his size, strength and impulsive nature, we do not feel it is safe for him to live with a young child.
Whisky also has some specific triggers. He can become uncomfortable around people wearing long sleeves and, occasionally, strong perfume smells. He dislikes being confined in enclosed spaces without windows and can become stressed in those situations.
We have worked extensively with Whisky, including professional training and support from a behaviourist. We have put a great deal of time and effort into understanding his behaviour and helping him manage his triggers.
Whisky is wonderful with adults and has so much love to give, but he is not an easy or low-maintenance dog. He needs consistency, clear boundaries, plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and an owner who understands and can safely manage his behaviour.
We believe he would be best suited to an adult-only, experienced household, ideally someone with previous experience with large, energetic dogs and behavioural challenges.
We are not looking for the first person who is interested in Whisky — we are looking for the right person.
This is an incredibly emotional decision for us. We love Whisky dearly, but with our daughter now in our lives, we have to put her safety first while also making sure Whisky gets the environment he needs to be happy.
We will be completely open and honest about his behaviour and are happy to answer any questions. Our priority is finding Whisky a stable, loving and experienced forever home where he can truly thrive.
