Description

Hera is a 4 Year old medium size Female weighing around 23KG. Her family believe she is a Raven livestock guardian breed mix. She is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Hera has had some health issues since being in the UK. She has suffered with ear wax which has been treated with drops and they need cleaning from time to time. Hera has previously had cracked and sore paw pads which needed a paw balm however this is now fully recovered. Hera was rescued in Romania in May 2024. She was described by her rescuers as a friendly girl who loves to lay down with you and have a fuss. Hera's family have unfortunately made the decision to surrender her due to unpredictable behaviours with the other dogs in the home. Hera is nervous and reactive around visitors in the home which will cause her to lunge and bark at them. She is currently kept completely seperated from visitors at first but with slow, gradual introductions she will settle and be good with them, her owner is always around for reassurance, Once trusted she is very loving. Hera is more nervous with young men (20-30) however is good around older men and women after gradual introductions over time, Although she does live with younger teens and has been fine with them, she cannot relax around friends coming round and does have to be separated and will constantly bark. Again she can build upon this over time but it is scary for children or adults seeing this. We do have a regular teen that visits and although she may occasionally bark at her, Hera is good with her. We now don’t tend to invite friends round, as it is difficult managing Heras behaviour and the other residents dogs excitement in our home. We regularly visit her 92 year old owner's dad who she is very good with. Hera was good around dogs in Romania however since living in the UK she has been unpredictable with the other small female dominant dog within the home. This has resulted in bites on the smaller dog, however she is good around the other larger male dog in the home, although he is very wary of Hera. It is felt this is due to both of the dogs being female and very dominant. Outside of the home they will tolerate each other for short walks on the lead, Hera therefore needs a dog free home to feel relaxed and not threatened. Hera currently shares her home with cats who she is very good with, but must keep eating areas separate, she is respectful around the elderly cat and will have a small sniff. She can therefore share her home with cats following sensible introductions. Outside since seeing so many local foxes, she has only just started to react to cats when out for a walk, but is fine with squirrels. Hera accepts a collar, harness and lead. I also have been muzzle training her, she doesn’t like it too much but will go out for a walk with it on. She is very strong on the lead and can pull towards things, so she will therefore need a strong owner to handle her size and strength. Hera is reactive towards vehicles, scooters, bikes and buses which can cause her to chase them. She had got more comfortable with these triggers, but a guy on a bike spooked both of us by riding right next to us on purpose, so we are now back to square one. She also is reactive to other dogs and people and was becoming less reactive but since the bike incident she is defensive. She cannot walk past on the same path as any of these triggers, she does need her space. We have worked with a behaviourist, where it had got so much better until the incident and she will need continued training on this. Hera is toilet trained and crate trained. She isn't destructive and is fine with household noises like the hoover and washing machine, she will go up and downstairs. Hera enjoys her walks, loves to sniff with her superpower nose and then will happily take herself off to sleep in her open crate away from everyone or lay and sleep on another bed in the kitchen, where I am. She can be left alone for up to 4 hours with no issues and she sleeps well overnight. She will bark if she needs the toilet. She loves a knuckle bone, licky mat, snuffle mat, kong and is very food motivated. Due to food allergens of poultry, I feed her Bentleys fish biscuits and tinned oily fish or eggs. I use cheese for training treats as well as kibble and she loves a tripe stick or beef jerky before bed. Hera is happy to be groomed and has a double coat and a coiled tail with feathering. She loves a game of tug and can be playful when happy. She will steal a shoe and run out into the garden with it for you to chase. I give her a 5-10 minute brush after her morning walk. She likes the attention and fuss. She’s does have a tendency to lick her front right paw to self soothe and possibly an old injury on her toe. She will happily get into the car but likes to sit on the back seat not in the boot. She has been sick on a couple of occasions, so I don’t feed her for a few hours if I know we are going out in the car. She is lovely company and loves a fuss but is not demanding. She is loyal and is a brilliant companion. If you respect here needs, she will be your best friend. Hera has had a meet which unfortunately did not go well initially and Hera was very anxious and reactive towards the lady. Any new home would need to be confident, experienced and live locally to be able to do multiple meets and build up her trust overtime. A rural home would be ideal for her so she isn't overwhelmed by people or busy areas. Or someone with an enclosed paddock or large garden.
