Description
Leo is a gorgeous 10kg, sandy-golden, curly-coated Minature Poodle x Lakeland Terrier, born September 2020 (6 years old). He is an incredibly affectionate, intelligent little dog who loves being fussed and spending time with his people. This is an extremely difficult decision for us, but since having our baby a year ago we have accepted a busy family life isn't the environment in which Leo is happiest.
At home, when things are calm, Leo is an absolute pleasure. He spends much of the day happily relaxing and has never been destructive. He is completely toilet trained and is comfortable being left at home alone to snooze for up to 6-8 hours.
Leo usually has around an hour's walking a day, either as one walk or split into two, and is perfectly happy waiting until after work for his walk. Equally, if you're someone who loves getting out into the countryside, he is very capable of much longer walks and adventures. He walks very well on the lead and is allowed off lead in familiar, appropriate places. His recall is generally good, although it can become less reliable if he has spotted food or his terrier prey drive kicks in. Leo travels very well in the car for short and longer journeys in a travel crate.
He is extremely clever and quick to pick up tricks and responds particularly well to positive, reward-based training and handling.
Leo is quite an anxious dog, and thrives in environments with humans that offer calm and consistent behaviour. Whilst Leo has successfully stayed in kennels with no issues, he prefers not to socialise with the majority of other dogs and would not be suitable for a household with other free roaming pets. Leo generally chooses to avoid other dogs on walks, and can get agitated if in close proximity. This, combined with a slightly territorial mindset, means that Leo is not a dog that does well in pubs and cafes – he would much rather snooze at home whilst the humans enjoy themselves!
Leo is incredibly affectionate and loves receiving fuss and attention from people including strangers. He gets very excited by visitors to the house and can become barky and attention seeking around guests. He can be helped considerably by visitors giving him attention where possible, using treats and enrichment such as Kongs or snuffle boxes, and keeping the environment predictable.
Leo prefers the predictability of adult attention and can become frustrated and anxious by the presence of smaller children. We are seeing this more now our child is mobile and we are increasingly having to separate them in different rooms, which we don’t feel is fair on Leo and contributes further to his anxiety, particular if visitors are in the house. Despite being anxious and excitable, Leo has never displayed aggression towards our child.
Leo has historically struggled a bit with formal handling (e.g. vet checks, grooming) but has improved in this area with positive reinforcement and is happy to be washed and brushed at home whilst visiting a professional groomer every 2-3 months.
Leo is in fine physical health with no vet trips for physical ailments in the last few years. He currently takes one vet-prescribed Reconcile tablet daily to help manage his anxiety and has been on the same dose since 2023. Whilst we haven't wanted to make changes to his medication while he has been adjusting to the major change of having a baby in the house, a new owner may wish to consider trialling Leo without this medication. He also takes Piriton during spring and summer for seasonal allergies. He is neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated, with his next vaccination due in December 2026.
We think Leo's ideal home would be a calmer, more predictable environment (without small children or other dogs/cats) with owners who understands that he is an anxious dog and is happy to continue using positive, reward-based approaches. He has so many wonderful qualities and, in the right environment, is a very easy dog to live with. He's loving, funny, incredibly cute, clever, adaptable with exercise, happy to be left alone and wonderfully chilled at home.
Rehoming Leo is not something we're doing lightly. We love him dearly. We simply feel that the life our family is growing into and the life in which Leo would be happiest are no longer quite the same thing. Our priority is finding the right person or home where he can feel secure, understood and very loved.
