Meet Sapphire ❤️ Sapphire is a beautiful young female Akita with a remarkable story of resilience. After being found as a stray, she became seriously unwell while serving her seven-day holding period in the pound. When she remained unclaimed, FOA stepped in to give her the chance she deserved. Following a major operation, Sapphire has made a fantastic recovery and is now back to full health. Believed to be between 1 and 2 years old, Sapphire is still discovering the world around her. She is learning new things every day and continues to build her confidence. Because she can be a little unsure of unfamiliar situations, she would be happiest in a quieter home away from busy environments. She is also sensitive to raised voices and thrives in a calm, patient setting. Sapphire has already mastered a sit and gets incredibly excited when treats appear. She loves to "chat" back to her people and enjoys playing with her toys, which she treats with great care. A real foodie at heart, she has regained weight well since her operation and will need a slow-feeding bowl to stop her from gulping her meals too quickly. Like many Akitas, Sapphire can seem a little aloof when meeting new people, but once trust is established, her affectionate side shines through and her tail rarely stops wagging. She is strong on the lead and currently walks using a head collar and harness for extra control and security, as she can sometimes try to back out of her equipment. Sapphire enjoys walking alongside calm male dogs and gains confidence from their company, although she is less comfortable around female dogs. She could live as an only dog and, with continued training and support, is expected to grow more confident on solo walks. Sapphire is house-trained, settles well, and can happily be left for around three hours. Currently living in a foster home in Tyne & Wear, Sapphire is looking for a loving family willing to continue her training and help her blossom into the wonderful companion she's proving herself to be.
