Description

Joy is a 5 year old medium sized female dog. She is currently residing at our UK kennels OSH. Joy was found on the streets as young puppy and was brought into the shelter at Constana. She arrived with her adoptive family in November 2020. However they decided to surrender Joy due to her beginning to guard when on the sofa or when under the table. Other reasons for the surrender include not having enough time that for her and her high prey drive. Joy then moved into a foster home where she was surrendered to OSH after just a month. The fosterer did not follow advice from PPTF or a behaviorist. Joy then spent the next year (11/2022 - 11/2023) at OSH. Joy then moved to another foster home but was again surrendered after just 3 weeks. She was surrendered due to an incident in the home where she became spooked and lunged at the male partner in the family. The family stated this was not the first instance she has had. Joy was then returned to the kennels where a year later she moved to an adoptive home. Joy was surrendered after just 24 hours and returned to the kennels. The adopter stated that a child ran up to Joy and she growled. The child's mum complained to the landlord and the landlord came round to see Joy. Joy was nervous and barking. It is unclear what exactly happened as a different story was told to the adopters admin, Kennel Manager and the Second Chancer team. Joy generally does like people and loves a fuss and a cuddle. However, Joy can bark at strangers and be wary of some men and can sometimes be reactive. Joy is described as generally good with familiar children, however due to unpredictable behaviours, Joy would be better suited to a home with no children. She is very playful and loves a rugby ball, she can be quite boisterous when playing and gets quite mouthy. She likes a comfortable bed and enjoys a long walk. Joy is a sweet girl but needs an owner who is experienced and won't be spooked with her guarding behaviours. With firm boundaries in place Joy is a lovely dog and can be managed easily. Joy does not enjoy going to the vets and can be aggressive towards them when they tried to examine her, she doesn't like to have her nails clipped and will bite if you attempt. Joy is in the process of being muzzle trained but will not comfortably wear one as of yet. Joy has bitten members of staff and lunged for their faces, she refuses to come out of her kennel for staff members, except for one in which she hasn't attempted to bite either. Joy has a high prey drive and while she has previously lived with a cat, she would prefer a home without. Joy has shown guarding behaviours while in a home and at the kennels. She will need an owner who understands this. Joy has been reactive to men while at the kennels but can be happily walked by them. She walks well on a lead and collar and harness. She can happily go for long walks and would suit an active family. Joy likes to cuddle up on her bed and is very affectionate. Joy travels well in the car.
