Cailleach are an incredibly small and bespoke Cairn Terrier keeper in the deep valleys of Exmoor National Park. We have only one Cairn who is already known to many in the Cairn world, her name, is Acorn.
Here at Cailleach, we work hard to produce Cairn Terriers of old, unchanged by time or breeding trends. Cailleach Cairn Terriers are bred purposefully, with each litter taking years to plan; the right dog for acorn, the right environment, the right time of year and finally the correct timing for all those who are involved in raising the best litter we can possibly produce. At Cailleach, we aim to produce healthy, confident and well balanced Cairn Terriers.
At Cailleach there are no kennels, Acorn is a family member and is treated as such to the highest degree, always out on our small holding with me, or at the beach, in town, enjoying days out in any and all activities that I can bring her too. In the evenings, she spends her time with me on the sofa or in front of the fire place on a premium wicker dog bed. Which I was delighted she took an interest in as I bought it for my previous Cairn as a boy and he never really took to it, it was more of an ornament until Acorn came along as the grand age of 8 weeks. Luckily he was around long enough to help me raise her into the most beautiful dog I have had the good fortune to know.
At Cailleach our puppies are raised as Acorn is kept, as part of the family. We raise our litters in a state of the art “Tekplas”whelping pen in one of our sitting rooms where we all spend our time together, eating the odd meal when the dining room table seems like too much effort or watching our family films in the evening. As the puppies grow and become more adventurous and active, we open the pen up to the room when we are all in attendance and incorporate playtime into our daily movie nights (admittedly we have to put the subtitles on so we can still understand what is going on). From 6 weeks they join us out on the small holding and through the rest of the house, causing joy and mischief wherever they go.
We always welcome questions and queries here at Cailleach either about how our puppies are raised or how Acorn is part of the family.
Acorn
Acorn (KC Name: Lindcoly Acorn) is 5 years old and this is her second litter. Acorn is an incredibly well balanced dog, integrating well with our sheep and chickens out on the small holding. You can see from the photos that she lives a very active lifestyle and is seldom on the lead. Acorn loves to play with dogs of all shapes and sizes. She is an excellent mother and an even better companion. I have had her since 8 weeks and she was raised by my late Cairn called Buster who was the toughest and most adventurous dog I have ever and I think will ever know. He did a fantastic job at helping me to shape her into the model canine that she is, whether its with the 6 year old that has asked to walk her around the local pub, or on the beach, or in town or in the home or out on our small holding. She is always exactly what I need her to be at the time, showcasing the cairns ability to adapt to environments and situations like it was expected and they had had a briefing before they went out. In the house Acorn is immaculately clean and always finds the perfect place to be on the busy days as we have builders in and out renovating our country house. When inside Acorn typically sleeps, whether it be on your lap or the sofa, or the bed, or the sheepskin rug, she always finds the best place for her to be to make our life’s easiest. When outside she is a very playful and energetic little girl, enjoying fetch particularly, and as you can tell from the photos, she is a water baby.

Now, when choosing studs at Cailleach it is incredibly important for us that we find a dog whose size and temperament will compliment Acorns. We require (not try to find), we require that the studs we use are balanced, well mannered, confident and are part of a family home. For this litter we have used Jasper (KC Name: Ocean Neptune) from Anthea Fairburn who shares the values that we hold in such a high esteem here at Cailleach. Jasper has a good coat, a nice head, a good gait and is 12” to the shoulder. He is also a great family member and was everything we needed in a stud for this litter.
The Litter
This litter has been bred specifically to be something very special here at Cailleach, as I shall myself be keeping a puppy back to join our family.
Both mother and father have had their eyes tested under the BVA eye scheme as well as being tested clear of CMO. But, here at Cailleach we go further. Acorn has also been genetically tested with a Wisdom panel for over 214 genetic conditions, passing with flying colours testing clear for all 214. Acorn also shows high genetic variability for the breed, an important detail when considering how to breed a healthy litter. Certificates of health from the above can always be provided.
This litter will be raised with the utmost care, nurturing confident and inquisitive personalities to give them the best start in life, setting them up for success for their new family homes.
The puppies will be ready for their new home from 8 weeks. They will leave, health tested, KC registered, microchipped, with a Classic Kong, blanket scented with the litter and a bag of natures menu puppy dog food.
