Description

Meet Hennessy, She is a 4 year old American bulldog lurcher cross. 3 years ago we experienced and fled domestic violence together. She's never been the same. She was away from me for just over a year while I was rehoused and upon her returning to me it's become clear I cannot meet her needs. I am disabled and with the best will in the world, had the person that returned her to me been honest about her behaviour I would have known I could not manage. Hennessy has attacked one of my other dogs over food rather severely. This was a number of months ago and there have been no further issues because I now am aware of her triggers and watch her like a hawk. She has resource guarding issues and this includes, people, food and treats and toys. She is separated for all of the above. Hennessy is extremely sensitive to emotions and noise and being in a flat just is not the right thing for her. I am unable to walk her and do not have anyone currently that I trust can do so safely. Hennessy must be muzzled outside of the home in public at all times and she is highly reactive. This includes children, adults and other dogs. Hennessy categorically cannot be with children or around children, it is not safe. All this said, Hennessy still loves life and is still a happy and beautiful girl. She is highly intelligent for her breed and has had lots of training both in the home and off leash. She just needs now, lots of training on leash. She will need all her jabs again as I was not given her vet paperwork when she was returned and haven't managed to get her in to a vet since having her back largely due to her behaviour. Hennessy was suit an adult only home or a home with older teenagers and no other animals. She would not suit city living and would be happiest living rurally or near the seaside as she did previously. She hasn't been walked in longer than I'd like to admit but when she is, her recall although a little rusty is beautiful. She comes back to check in herself so I don't often have to recall her, and usually (haven't let her off lead around any dogs in quite some time) just goes and sniffs other dogs and gets on with her walk. I don't care about money, her safety is absolutely the most important thing. She was my first puppy and I feel as though I've failed her hugely. The least I can do is give her what she needs. Anyone that is interested in Hennessy will need to have several meetings and walks with her until I can see that she trusts and feels safe. She will not at any point because alone with strangers until I feel she is happy and trusts enough. Any potential new owners will need at least two references from friends and family about their previous experience with large breed dogs and these references will need to come directly from the authors. Dogs trust and RSPCA have deemed Hennessy unrehomeable due to her fear reactivity on the lead and now bite history with one of my other dogs. I don't believe this to be true at all. I am her biggest trigger due to her being in my arms to protect her when my ex partner beat me. She has shown great progress on the rare occasion I'm well enough to do training with her. And responds extremely well to the training she already has, for example hand gestures rather than vocal commands. I will not mess around when it comes to her safety and will make damn sure that she goes to no less than the dream home. She deserves no less than the world and I'll make sure she gets to live the rest of her days as happy and spoilt as can be.
