I am looking for a loving, experienced forever home for a six-year-old male cockatiel.
This decision has not been made lightly. Due to my other commitments, I have realised that I cannot provide him with the amount of companionship, interaction and out-of-cage time that he genuinely needs. Rather than keep him in a home where I know I cannot fully meet those needs, I want to find him a permanent home in which he can thrive.
He is a sweet, affectionate little bird with a huge personality. He loves being close to his favourite person, enjoys sitting on your head or beside you on the sofa, and likes to be involved in everyday household life. He is also very vocal, loves to sing and is generally an extremely endearing and entertaining companion.
He forms very strong bonds with the people he trusts and has a deep need for companionship. He is happiest when he can spend plenty of time outside his cage, either interacting directly with his person or simply perching nearby. He therefore needs a home where somebody is around for much of the day and can include him as part of their daily routine.
From his behaviour so far, he appears to have a strong preference for women and is particularly eager to form a close bond with a female owner. This is not an absolute requirement, but I believe he is most likely to settle successfully with somebody who fits that profile.
Once bonded, he can become protective of his chosen person. He may behave territorially towards other people, including flying at or attempting to bite somebody he perceives as a threat. He can therefore be aggressive at times and is not suitable for an inexperienced home. His new owner will need to understand parrot behaviour and be willing to work patiently and consistently with him using positive, reward-based training.
He enjoys head scritches, but only on his own terms, and he will make it clear when he does not want to be touched.
Daily out-of-cage time is essential. He becomes frustrated when confined for too long and may pace, call repeatedly or attempt to get attention. He also finds bedtime and separation from his bonded person difficult, so he would benefit from a patient owner who can provide reassurance, consistency and a dependable routine.
None of these behaviours are his fault. He is a loving, sensitive bird who appears to have experienced considerable change and is desperate to feel secure with somebody who will not leave him. In the right home, with an experienced person who can give him the time, patience and companionship he needs, I genuinely believe he will flourish.
The home I am looking for
His new home must:
- Have previous experience caring for parrots, with cockatiel-specific experience strongly preferred.
- Be able to provide substantial supervised out-of-cage time every day.
- Have somebody at home for a significant proportion of the day.
- Understand that he may be territorial or defensive once bonded.
- Be willing to continue working with him patiently and positively.
- Be committed to offering him a permanent, lifelong home.
- Not intend to breed from him.
He will come with at least a small temporary cage, although a larger and more suitable permanent setup may also be available.
Rehoming conditions:
- A minimum rehoming fee of £100 will apply
- A home check will be required.
- A handover agreement must be signed.
- I reserve the right to refuse any applicant if I do not believe the home is suitable.
- He must not be bred from.
- If his new owner is ever unable to continue caring for him, he must be returned to me and must not be sold, rehomed or passed on to anybody else without my agreement.
He has previously been rehomed through no fault of his own, and my priority is ensuring that his next home is his permanent one. I am looking for the right person, not simply the first person to enquire.
