Description
Riley is looking for a home where he can enjoy all the comforts of a loving family. We believe he is a Schnauzer–Labrador mix, which gives him his charming beard, soulful eyes and impressive size. He is a polite member of our kennels and only asks that you don’t mind wiping his beard dry after he’s finished drinking.
Riley was one of the lucky ones to make it out of a Romanian kill shelter. His sweet nature made it clear that he would be much happier as a family companion, and since leaving the shelter he has been loving his new freedom. He recently packed his bags and made the journey to our Nottinghamshire kennels.
His carers describe Riley as very well mannered. When he first arrived, he tried jumping up to say hello, but after being told “off” he quickly learned that this wasn’t polite and found better ways to get attention. He is easy to walk on the lead, understands where the end of the lead is and doesn’t pull beyond it. He would probably enjoy using a long-line lead so he can potter about at his own pace.
Riley needed a trip to the vets recently, and it turned out to be a good test of how he would react. He had a dew claw that was growing into his foot, which was likely causing him some discomfort. Even so, the vet commented that he was an ideal patient. He stayed calm throughout, had no issues with his claw being clipped, and patiently stood with his paw in a disinfectant wash. The vets said he would be welcome back any time. He travelled well in the car. After some initial wriggling, he decided to lie down and sit still, as long as someone was giving him a scratch.
Riley could live with another dog and is no trouble at all around them. As he hasn’t lived in a home before, having another dog would likely help him settle, giving him a companion to follow and learn from. Given his gentle nature, children should not be a problem, although we ask that any children in the home are over eight years old, simply to avoid accidental tumbles due to Riley’s size.
It’s easy to get on Riley’s good side – he loves his treats and is always careful not to snatch them. He enjoys chewing on a cow hoof in his crate and settles nicely in the evenings. Riley really would be an easy, rewarding dog for people who love large breeds.
