Description
This listing is for live nymphs of Oreophoetes peruana, the Peruvian Fern Stick Insect. Individuals will be L2-4/5, so will all have gone through their first moult, ensuring that you receive established insects.
A very brightly coloured species with nymphs a vivid yellow and black and adults scarlet (in the case of males) or orange and black (in the case of females. In some cultures, the females retain their juvenile colouring, but this culture produces orange/red females.
In keeping with their bright colours, when alarmed, older nymphs and adults are able to produce a strong-smelling chemical that causes irritation when in contact with mucus membranes. Gentle handling should prevent this, and I find it’s actually quite rare that they feel provoked enough to defend themselves this way. Always wash your hands following handling or maintenance of these insects.
This species is fairly simple to keep provided some very specific requirements are met. As their name suggests, these are only able to eat ferns, though they will accept any fern species offered. Take care to provide only wild ferns or those grown organically, and to collect away from busy roads or areas where pesticides may be sprayed. Most ferns bought from garden centres or online are unlikely to be safe.
Humidity must be kept high for young nymphs (~80% RH) and no lower than 70% RH as adults. Temperatures of over 25C are dangerous, particularly when younger, and can be fatal if exceeded for an extended period of time. Ideal temperatures are 18-23C.
While not a large species, they are quite active and need more ‘personal’ space than some phasmids. I personally don’t keep adults in anything smaller than a glass 45x30x30 terrarium.

To avoid delays and the insects being stuck in transit over weekends, shipping will only occur Mondays-Thursdays. During periods of extreme weather, shipping will be delayed until favourable conditions resume.
