This is an incredibly difficult decision for our family. We love our one year old Cavopoo very much, but following discussions with our behaviourist, we have made the heartbreaking decision to look for a more suitable home for him. He is an affectionate, intelligent, playful and energetic young dog who loves his walks and has lots of wonderful qualities. He has a particularly strong bond with the man of the house and can be a very loving and rewarding companion. However, we need to be completely honest about his behaviour because finding the right home for him is much more important to us than finding a home quickly. He has bitten a number of people. The incidents have generally happened when he is guarding something or is highly aroused. He can react if someone tries to take something from him, or if someone approaches or touches him when he does not want them to. Most recently, he bit a neighbour who was approaching him simply to say hello. He is also very protective of his home and can become highly aroused by visitors, delivery people and unfamiliar people coming into the house. We have sought professional advice and our behaviourist feels that he would be best suited to a quiet, adult-only home, potentially with a retired couple or a single man who has plenty of time for him and enjoys a calm lifestyle. A home without children and without lots of visitors would be important. A calm, neutered female dog may potentially be a good companion for him, subject to careful introductions and professional advice. This would need to be considered on an individual basis. He would need an owner who is confident, patient and experienced with dogs displaying resource guarding and high arousal, and who is willing to continue appropriate management and behavioural support. We appreciate that this is a significant commitment and that he is not the right dog for everyone. He should not be viewed as a typical family Cavapoo or as a dog that simply needs more exercise or basic training. We want to be completely upfront about his bite history and his need for careful management. At the same time, we don't want his difficult behaviour to overshadow what a lovely dog he can be. He is still only one year old, and he has a huge amount of love, personality and potential to give to the right person. We are absolutely not looking to rush this. We would rather take our time and find someone who genuinely understands him and can offer him the calm environment he needs. This is heartbreaking for us, but we believe that finding the right environment for him is the most responsible and loving thing we can do. We will not arrange a meeting at our home without first establishing that a potential home is genuinely suitable.
