Description
We are having to make such an awful decision and re home our Belgian x Staffy. This is no fault of his, he is great. Don’t get me wrong still has his typical puppy moments, he is sometimes a cheeky boy.
He can be vocal when he feels like it. He has a good mix of both temperaments. Intelligent and active as a mal but on the other side affectionate and playful like a staff. Can be a lazy boy considering. Where you go, he goes. He just likes to be near and see what’s your doing.
He is quick to learn, food driven. Still at perfect age for training. He knows sit, down, up, stand, centre, paw and wait (working on so he waits longer). We do this in the house, garden and walks. On walks he needs more time to lock in. We play hide with his treats in the house and garden and he sniffs them out in no time. We hide other treats while he is focussed on the first ones and he locks in and loves it.
Working on recall. When we take him on walks we keep his recall lead on. He does come, but when something catches his attention he takes abit more time. We have had him off lead and each time he has come back perfect. He does pull slightly on his short lead but we have found if we clip it under his harness rather than on top he slows and doesn’t pull. When it is on top we stop walking till the lead loosens or we switch directions. This works fine.
- Crate Trained. Sleeps in his crate at night. Through the day we have it open, he comes and goes.
- He doesn’t wake up at night for the toilet.
- He goes to sleep anywhere between 8:30-10:00 completely depending on the day we had but this of course is just our routine at the moment. We can tell when he is tired as he gets groggy, barky, nothing settles him so we put him in his crate and he sleeps straight away.
-Been left for 6/7hours and was fine. We free roam him and no issues so far.
- Most the time when he goes down for a sleep through the day he will be on the sofa or plonked on the floor.
- He is house trained - when he wants to go outside he goes to the back door and sits and waits
-Travels well in the car
Socialised with friends, neighbours and dogs on our outings. He has been fine and plays with no incident to date. He has a dog he plays with regular and has done group walks with a walker. He is still learning how to play and when to calm.
He has chased our cat so they are separated and our cat just doesn’t tolerate him so he is out of the way anyway.
He has been around kids 6+ and has been absolutely fine. He is giddy with new people but does calm as we get guest to ignore when they first come in then fuss him when he calms.
He loves the outside and burying his bones, then goes and digs them back up. He has a sandpit and digs. We sometimes hide treats in there. We have a pool he goes in some days but then others he isn’t bothered. He chases the water from the hose. He has been to the beach often and loves it. Went fully in the sea too but didn’t swim. We have found his flirt pole and balls seem to be of interest the most. As well as a duck toy we have. He also loves the broom and mop so that’s a fun task 😂
