Ali – German Spitz bitch, approx. 12 months old
📍 Currently in foster in Gloucestershire
🏡 Adult home with other dogs
Ali raised her babies beautifully… Now this young little mum is ready to start a brand new life of her own.
Ali came into our care with her babies after her owner found herself completely overwhelmed but wanted to do the very best for Ali and her puppies.
It was a very sad handover, made with love. Her owner recognised they needed support and chose rescue so that Ali and her little family could continue to be raised safely and responsibly.
Ali’s babies have now all flown the nest. She was an absolutely amazing mum who cared for them right up until the day they left. Considering she is only a baby herself, she did an incredible job. We were worried she might struggle once they had gone, but it was almost as if she knew they were ready – and so was she.
We had gradually built up time away from the puppies as they grew, and Ali began joining us on longer dog walks and spending more time with our own dogs and family.
We think this really helped prepare her for the next stage of her life.
Of course, when you’ve supported a dog through raising her puppies, you naturally become very bonded with them, which makes it harder to let them go.
We will therefore be looking for the right home for Ali, and potential adopters should be prepared to answer plenty of questions.
When Ali first arrived she was a little reactive and overwhelmed – which is understandable for a young mother arriving in a strange home with strange dogs. She had her own room off our lounge with a stairgate so she could take things at her own pace and learn that she and her babies were safe.
The nervous little dog that first arrived has now disappeared.
Ali is now completely relaxed with her two foster dog siblings, and we also currently have three home-boarding dogs staying – all of whom she has accepted without any issues. She has been on pack walks with other members of the Starfish family and their dogs and has done very well.
Out on walks she can still be nervous of unfamiliar dogs or people, and her response is to bark from a distance. She isn’t nasty – just unsure. We simply ignore the behaviour and redirect her, and it improves with every walk.
Ali absolutely loves being off lead and has an excellent recall. She truly thrives in the countryside – woods, fields and open spaces are where she is happiest. She travels happily in the car with the other dogs too.
In the home Ali is a lovely, settled little dog. She is mostly house-trained now and will only have the occasional accident if we forget to take her out, as she doesn’t yet ask to go outside.
She enjoys being close to you and will happily lie at your feet while you work.
She is a very active little dog who loves running and exploring on walks, so if you cannot give her plenty of exercise and stimulation please don’t apply.
Ali has clearly been a loved dog. Her previous owner wanted whoever was going to be her new family “Please tell her new family that I really did love her.” We promised we would.
In the home she is friendly with visitors, though she can still be a little unsure of things when out and about. With the right people and continued guidance, her confidence will continue to grow. She is a bright and very special little dog.
She has even accompanied us to cafés. She can feel a little unsure in busy environments but settles well if she is sitting on your lap.
The home Ali needs
Adult home preferred (visiting grandchildren would be fine)
A home with another confident dog – she gains a lot of confidence from her dog companions
A home that enjoys countryside walks and an active lifestyle
She lives happily with larger dogs, but ideally she would have another dog closer to her own size so she has a playmate.
At the moment she enjoys chasing games but when the bigger dogs chase her back she sometimes decides she’s not quite sure about the game anymore!
Over the next few weeks Ali will be spayed, and once she has recovered she will be ready to start her new life.
Ali is a very special little dog who deserves a very special match – a loving home with a confident canine buddy and people willing to continue helping her grow in confidence.
If you feel you could offer Ali the home she deserves, please email us to request our adoption questionnaire:
