Description
Derry is a large, three-year-old male who is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Derry came to the UK from Romania in March 2023 and was surrendered in February 2024 after showing reactivity in the home and on walks. He had bitten visitors inside the home and later bit a man while on a walk, which led to the decision to surrender him.
When Derry first arrived at the kennels he was very stressed and would chew the bars or react to movement around him. He has since been started on Florentine medication to help manage his stress and anxiety, and he is showing steady improvement.
Over time Derry has made excellent progress through a structured training plan focusing on reactivity and confidence building. He has worked on marker-word and muzzle training and responds well to positive reinforcement. He now walks with a small group of dogs alongside experienced volunteers and has shown little or no reaction to them, even offering play bows towards dogs he knows. He continues to wear his muzzle for safety, and his muzzle training is in progress.
Derry is still a strong dog to walk and wears a secure no-escape harness. He enjoys his training sessions and loves to play fetch and tug in the paddocks. When relaxed he is affectionate and playful with his handlers and responds well to structure and praise. He benefits from regular enrichment and time outside to decompress.
Although Derry has made great progress, he remains sensitive to strangers and new situations. He will need a calm and experienced owner who can read his signals and manage introductions carefully. He will require multiple meets at the kennels before rehoming so that he can build trust at his own pace.
Derry can live with another calm dog following slow and sensible introductions and several successful meets. He cannot live with cats and would be best suited to a quiet, adult-only home (18+). He is clean in his kennel and has continued to make steady progress with his training and confidence.
Derry is a bright and energetic dog with lots of potential. He needs a very experienced home that can offer him routine, patience and positive handling. With the right environment and continued support, Derry will keep building on the progress he has already made.
