🐾 Pippa 🐾 1-year-old Brittany Spaniel Pippa is a beautiful, clever and gentle young Brittany Spaniel who is still learning to feel completely comfortable in the world. She can be timid when she first meets you, but once she gets to know and trust you, she becomes wonderfully affectionate and loves her cuddles. She has the cutest little noises when she’s feeling particularly close to you — almost as though she’s having a very serious conversation about everything she’s had to endure! 😂 Pippa is not the typical bouncy, carefree Spaniel. She’s a quiet, serious little girl who currently doesn’t interact a great deal with people beyond enjoying their company and her cuddles. She’s still finding her confidence, and there is every possibility that we’ll see more of her personality as she becomes more secure. She has already shown that she can cope remarkably well with new experiences. She’s travelled beautifully in the car, has been on a bus, and has visited caves, castles, mills and even a mine, behaving very well throughout. At home she settles nicely, is house trained and can be left for short periods. Pippa is polite and slightly submissive with other dogs. She enjoys meeting them but tends to do her own thing rather than becoming involved in games. Boisterous or larger dogs can overwhelm her, so a calm, smaller dog may suit her better. Alternatively, she could potentially thrive as an only dog, where she can have more space and attention to develop her confidence. She is curious about cats and farm animals but isn’t overbearing around them. 🐦 Pippa’s very serious relationship with birds! This is an important part of Pippa’s character — and something any potential adopter needs to understand. Pippa has an extremely strong prey drive, particularly when it comes to birds. She is completely focused on the mission of finding them, flushing and pursuing them. This means that Pippa cannot simply be allowed off lead in an unsecured area. She will need safe, enclosed spaces where she can exercise without the opportunity to disappear after whatever has caught her attention. On lead, Pippa is responsive when her handler gives her the input and guidance she needs. She isn’t a dog who will simply wander happily alongside you without thought; she benefits from having someone engaged with her and paying attention to what she’s doing. With that input, she responds well. ❤️ Helping Pippa build her confidence Pippa is still working through some minor issues around food and training. Her regular meals are no longer a problem, but certain situations at home — particularly around training — can make her feel uncomfortable and she may refuse a treat. This is improving, but it means that training needs to be approached patiently and positively. At times, Pippa will retreat to her crate when she feels unsure, although this too is getting better. She would benefit from someone who understands that confidence cannot be rushed. She doesn’t need to be pushed into situations before she’s ready; she needs calm reassurance, consistency and the opportunity to discover that good things happen when she engages with the world. Pippa is looking for a home that understands her rather than expecting her to be a stereotypical Spaniel. She isn’t currently the tail-wagging, bum-wriggling, endlessly playful dog who wants to sniff everything and be involved in everything. She’s much more reserved than that. But underneath her serious exterior is a very affectionate young dog who, once she trusts you, absolutely loves being close and having a cuddle.
