Description
Bear is a medium-sized male who is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He was born in March 2022.
Bear arrived in the UK in the summer of 2023 and was shortly surrendered due to displaying typical puppy behaviours such as nipping. His previous owner requested that he be transferred to our UK Safe Haven kennels immediately.
Since arriving at OSH, Bear has shown strong guarding tendencies. He will guard his space and possessions from other dogs, so he cannot share his home with one. However, he can walk with other dogs following calm and controlled introductions. He also guards food from both dogs and people, so must be fed separately. He has improved with trusted handlers and will now take treats gently as long as they are not taken from him.
Bear has been reactive to some dogs on walks but not all. When calm, he can walk alongside others, but if dogs approach too closely, particularly from the front, he can become defensive and may redirect. He has been attending training sessions to work on this and is responding well. Bear is currently being muzzle trained and is taking to it well. He has attempted to redirect when he is overwhelmed but its not a common occurrence
Bear is a loving and playful boy who enjoys cuddles and attention. He can be overenthusiastic in play and will need continued training and guidance to manage his excitement. He has shown some destructive behaviours with toys, likely through boredom, but does not destroy bedding or furniture. Bear can be flinchey and startle at loud noises but relaxes once he trusts the people around him.
He has not met cats and cannot live with them. Bear cannot live with young children due to his guarding tendencies and the risk of redirection but could live in a calm, adult-only home with children aged 16+ who understand how to give him space.
It is believed from his previous home that Bear travels well in the car. He was crate trained previously and will need further work on this and his toilet training in his new home.
Bear would benefit from a quiet home in a settled neighbourhood where he will not encounter many unfamiliar dogs. He will need an experienced owner who understands guarding and reactivity and can continue to build on his training with consistency and positive reinforcement. Once Bear trusts you, he is affectionate, playful and full of love to give.
