Some rescue journeys begin with a phone call. Mateo’s began with a chance glance at the side of the road. We were driving to a shelter where we support a few dogs - taking them good food, checking on their wellbeing and paying for their maintenance. Maria was sitting beside me when, passing the weekly market, we noticed someone selling dogs crammed into a couple of crates. We stopped. The conditions those poor dogs were in were heartbreaking. Among them were two boys we simply could not leave behind. We paid to get them out of there and brought them into our care. We named them MATEO and MAVERICK. ❤️ 🐾 MATEO’S NEW BEGINNING We subsequently learned that the seller was known locally for breeding dogs in very poor conditions and selling them. We approached the Animal Police and the Local Council, hoping something could be done. Sadly, our attempts brought no action to protect the dogs. For Mateo and Maverick, however, that day changed everything. Mateo’s coat was tangled with large clumps of matted, muddy hair. Maria carefully trimmed away the worst of it, beginning the work of making him comfortable and cared for. Beneath that neglected coat was a lovely young dog with so much affection to give. What has touched us most is how friendly he is. Despite the conditions he came from, Mateo welcomes people and enjoys their company. He is a well-behaved, affectionate boy who gets along well with other dogs - a lovely companion waiting for someone to discover him. 🤍 MEET MATEO 🎂 Date of birth: 15 November 2025, as we’ve been told by the puppy farmer 🐶 Sex: Male 🧬 Breed: Mixed breed - possibly a West Highland White Terrier (“Westie”) mix ⚖️ Current weight: Approximately 10 kg With his shaggy white coat, dark nose and lovely expressive face, Mateo has a distinctly Westie-like appearance. We suspect some West Highland White Terrier ancestry, although his exact parentage is unknown. He currently weighs around 10 kg and may gain some weight as his condition improves with regular, nutritious meals and proper care. 💉 Vaccinated and microchipped 🩺 Blood tested 🪱 Treated for worms and fleas ✂️ Will be neutered and professionally groomed before rehoming His exact ancestry is unknown, so we describe him as a mixed breed rather than promise a particular pedigree. His future family will need to keep up with regular brushing and professional grooming, ensuring his coat stays comfortable and free from the painful matting he arrived with. 💞 A LOVING, SOCIABLE BOY Mateo is friendly with everyone he has met in our care and sociable with other dogs. He enjoys affection and responds warmly to people - qualities that make spending time with him such a pleasure. We would love to find him a home where that affection is returned every day. Somewhere he can enjoy companionship, walks, opportunities to play and a comfortable place to rest close to his people. His lovely temperament is already clear, but moving into a new home will still be a big change. His adopters should give him time to settle, introduce routines gently and help him learn what is expected through patience and kind, consistent guidance. We have not confirmed his house-training, how he copes when left alone or his compatibility with cats. Please talk to us about your household so we can discuss what is known and whether further assessment is needed. 🏡 THE HOME WE HOPE TO FIND Mateo needs people who want a dog as a much-loved member of the family and have time to help him settle. He could be considered for a home with a friendly resident dog, subject to a suitable introduction. His sociable nature is a lovely starting point, and we will discuss each potential match individually. We are looking for adopters who understand that his needs extend beyond his first few weeks at home: regular grooming, veterinary care, companionship, exercise and gentle training will all be part of loving Mateo throughout his life. In line with our rescue policy, we do not rehome to households with children under 10. Any home with older children will be considered according to the individual match. 🌿 ADOPTING THROUGH FRIENDS INDEED DOG RESCUE We put care into finding the right home for each dog and the right dog for each family. We will speak openly with you about Mateo and answer your questions before you make a commitment. 🐾 Home checks apply and can often be completed online. 🐾 An adoption agreement and adoption fee apply.
