Cyprus, now in Dundee About Bracken Bracken is currently in foster care in Dundee, Scotland, and is now ready to start looking for the right permanent home. He is a young, energetic and very sweet natured dog who has been through such a lot in his short life, but remains affectionate, people focused and super enthusiastic about everything! When Bracken was rescued, he was in a bad way. He had suffered a serious collision with a car which resulted in a broken left leg, a fractured left hip and a dislocated right leg. He underwent surgery for all of these injuries and has healed well overall. He remains active and loves being out and about, but due to the extent of the trauma he still needs to continue building muscle and strength. At times he can appear a little unstable on his back end and may stumble or fall, particularly when tired or over excited, which is completely understandable given what his body has been through. Ongoing strengthening work and sensible exercise will be important for him going forward. Bracken is a friendly and loving boy who adores people. He has no real sense of personal space (typical Pointer!), so while he is very good with people, he will need clear and consistent boundaries. He currently lives in his foster home with a child aged ten and is friendly and playful, though younger children may find his enthusiasm a bit much at this stage. Bracken has very puppy like traits and this is often a result of being in the shelter for a long period of time. He’s still learning how to behave in a conventional home, and he craves company and the feeling of being included. He can be excitable, silly and impulsive, but he also has a very sweet personality and settles down well after walks and playtime. He enjoys cuddles, food, treats and toys, especially those that provide mental stimulation as he’s clever and enjoys using his brain. He already knows how to sit, his recall is improving each day, and he responds well to training On the lead, Bracken is great. He walks politely, does not pull and enjoys sniffing and taking in his surroundings. He is calm when passing other dogs and has shown no reactivity on walks. He has also passed cats a couple of times without reacting. He travels very well in the car and is calm and settled during journeys. Bracken has lived in a shelter with many other dogs for an extended period of time and we know he can get along with them, but in a home setting he’s still getting his bearings and trying to find his place alongside the resident dogs. Being a shelter dog, he has a tendency to steal treats or toys given the chance, and he can’t always read social cues that well. A playful but patient dog would be a great influence on him, but he could also be the only dog in the household. Bracken would suit a home that understands young, energetic dogs and is able to provide clear boundaries, ongoing training and lots of love. He could cope in the city or a suburban or residential area, as long as his exercise needs are met and his recovery continues to be supported sensibly. Despite the challenges he faces, Bracken is a genuinely lovely dog with so much affection to give. He is people oriented, eager to engage and quick to settle when his needs are met. In the right hands, with patience and consistency, he has the potential to grow into a wonderful companion.
