Description
Archie is a 6-year-old medium-sized male. He is chipped and neutered but is not currently up to date with his vaccinations.
Archie was rescued from Romania and arrived in the UK in 2019. Since then, he has lived in several homes before returning to our Cheshire kennels.
Archie has been handed back on more than one occasion due to concerns about his defensive and protective behaviours around people and other dogs. Most recently, he was returned after biting an elderly resident dog in the home. In a previous home, he was reported to have bitten a stranger at the family property. The bite was described as a warning bite that left superficial marking and did not require medical attention. In another incident, Archie and another resident dog caused injury to a dog in the home that required veterinary treatment.
Archie is unpredictable and can become highly reactive towards other dogs, both in and outside of the home. When frustrated or over-stimulated, he may redirect this behaviour towards people. He has previously bitten during such incidents. Archie is muzzle trained and must wear a muzzle in any environment where he may encounter other dogs. Archie can be reactive to men and has bitten in the past but has been fine being introduced to females at the kennels. After a few introductions he can be handled by men. He has no issues with Will handling him at the kennels. Archie's reactivity has gotten much better with training and lots of positive reinforcement, his redirects are minimal now and don't occur more often than not. He is friends with Joy at the kennels and has taken a liking to Derry, however, we think it is best he stays as an only dog in a home due to his high guarding tendencies. Archie can be stubborn when wearing the muzzle on walks but if the handler is confident and has lots of high value rewards he can be persuaded, he responds much better to the Muzzle Movement muzzle than he did the baskerville ones.
When relaxed and in a trigger-free environment, Archie enjoys fuss and cuddles and has been described as very affectionate once he feels safe. He is intelligent, food-motivated and quick to learn. He enjoys toys, especially balls, and will often use them to encourage play. Archie likes to sunbathe in the garden or lie in front of the fire and has a good appetite for treats, carrots and dentasticks. Archie loves a cuddle and will sit with you for hours very content while having affection. He is a very people oriented dog and he does walk nicely on the lead when he's not reacting. He goes on group walks with dogs that he's familiar with without reacting to them and can be distracted from passing by dogs with high value rewards. Archie is the most reactive to tractors and lorries and some vans, these are triggers that he's struggling with at the moment and are being worked on with him with the kennel staff.
Archie enjoys his walks and loves to have a good sniff around. Although he was initially nervous about having his lead put on, he has improved and now gets excited when he knows it’s time to go out. He can be unsettled when visitors move around the house and will react to unfamiliar people, but once he recognises them as friendly, he seeks attention and interaction. He is not comfortable being hosed down after walks but will allow towel drying.
Archie cannot live with other dogs or cats. He requires a quiet, adult-only home (18+) with few visitors. He is house trained but not crate trained and will need support settling into a new environment.
Archie needs a very experienced home with owners who fully understand his history and are confident managing his reactivity and unpredictability safely.
