Meet Jojo – Our Lovely English Pointer approx 2 years old fostered in Gloucestershire. I come out to Spain twice a year to work with a rescue charity we have supported for 15 years. At Starfish, we only put dogs up for adoption that I have met personally and would be happy to welcome into my own home with my dogs, or into one of our experienced foster homes. Jojo is one of those dogs. Jojo's story Jojo has had a sad start to life. He was dumped in Spain as a young puppy of around five months old, in December 2024. Somehow, he survived by living near a school, where he would lie in the road waiting for the children who kindly shared their sandwiches and leftover food with him. He lived this way for approximately six weeks. Sadly, during this time, Jojo was hit by a car. We believe it may have been deliberate, although we will never know for certain. Thankfully, one of the children's mums found him and took him to the vets, where he was found to have broken ribs. Despite everything he had been through, he apparently sat quite happily in the back of the car with the children. She couldn't bear the thought of putting him back on the streets, so she managed to secure him a place with the rescue we work with in Spain in February 2025. This is where Jojo has grown up and, perhaps for the first time in his young life, felt safe. Getting to know Jojo When I first met Jojo, he was happily lying in the orchard, watching the birds and the world go by in his own little world. He was easily distracted by a few treats, which soon helped him engage with us, and what a friendly boy he turned out to be! Jojo currently lives with his foster mum and two other dogs in the Spanish countryside. I watched them all enjoy high-value treats together, crunching away quite happily alongside one another. When I introduced Jojo to my own dog, he gave a lovely little hello, complete with a wagging tail. He really is a sweet boy. He has a slightly goofy, easily distracted side to him, which I suspect is simply part of his character. He was gentle, laid-back and very pleasant company. He seems to have a lovely nature with both people and other dogs, and I certainly didn't see a bad bone in him. We took Jojo out for a little walk, and he can be quite strong on the lead. Although he has been out and about, walking on a lead is not something he is particularly accustomed to. His current life is very much countryside living, with plenty of land to explore, and he happily follows his foster mum around. One thing we cannot yet say for certain is whether Jojo could be trusted off the lead. He was very interested in everything around him when we were out, and I wouldn't have felt confident letting him loose. His foster mum has not let him off the lead either, so this is something his new family will need to work on carefully, with his safety always coming first. The home Jojo needs Jojo is an English Pointer, and anyone considering him needs to understand the breed. Pointers are active, athletic dogs with a strong hunting instinct and potentially significant prey drive. They need exercise, opportunities to use their noses and brains, and people who will enjoy giving them an active and interesting life. We are looking for an experienced home, ideally with previous experience of rescue dogs or an adult dog who has needed to learn the basics from scratch. Jojo will need patient people who understand that he has not grown up in a typical family home and will need help learning all the little things many dogs take for granted. He can be strong on the lead, and his recall is an unknown, so his family will need to be prepared to work on these skills gradually and positively. Secure spaces, sensible management and ongoing training will be important while he settles and learns to trust his new people. Jojo is not a complicated little soul, but he does need the right home. He has a lovely temperament, enjoys the company of people and other dogs, and has so much potential. In many ways, he is a blank canvas, ready for someone to help him discover what life as a much-loved family dog is all about. After everything he has been through, Jojo deserves a home where he will be safe, understood and included in family life. We would love to find someone who sees beyond his sad beginnings and recognises the lovely dog waiting to blossom. A few important details Jojo has been neutered and is up to date with his vaccinations. We will also arrange his blood tests before he travels. If you have experience of the Pointer breed, enjoy an active outdoor life and have the time and patience to help Jojo learn, we would love to hear from you. Could you be the person who finally gives Jojo the forever home he deserves? Dolly day dream
