Description
Dexter is a loving and energetic dog. He will happily cuddle on the sofa and sit under your desk whilst you game or work but he can also be super hyper and needs at least one walk a day and regular enrichment activities.
Dexter has had two homes, the first home could not cope with his high energy and said they did not have the time for him. In his second home he has spent the past 5 years living with a young couple who have devoted their time to training him. He has gone from an anxious and protective dog to an outgoing dog that will listen to all basic commands. Although his recall is perfect within the household/garden, he is not trained to be off the lead during walks. This is because he is not used to being around other dogs, animals or children and his behaviour was originally very unpredictable due to his anxiety. There is potential for Dexter to be trained and desensitised to other pets or children however he needs a home with no pets or children until the new owner is confident this is the right decision. There is still progress to be made with Dexter, for example he does have resource guarding issues, although his owner would be able to pick up his food bowl whilst he's eating, there is a high potential that if a child or stranger were to do this he could react aggressively. Dexter has negative associations around harnesses, muzzles, water, flea medication (unless given as tablets), towels and can be reactive around loud or sudden gestures. Dexter is quite good at walking on the lead, he will happily accept any treats and is definitely not a fussy eater. He's very obedient when he understands what's being asked of him The current owner has worked with two professional dog trainers to focus on his anxious behaviour style and they have established that he needs plenty of exercise, routine and enrichment to reduce his anxiety.
The current owners are very sad to be rehoming Dexter, it has been a hard decision to make however due to their current personal circumstances and future accommodation it has become impossible to keep him. We ask that if you consider taking on Dexter you ensure you have the time, energy, devotion and patience to give him what he needs. Dexter will come with his beds, bowls, Kong toys, lead/harness and of course any left over food.
