Size and Build

The Bolognese is a small, compact dog typically standing between 25 and 30 cm tall at the withers. Males range from 27 to 30 cm, with females slightly smaller at 25 to 28 cm. Weight varies between 2.5 and 5 kg, males generally being heavier. The breed displays a square body outline with well-developed muscle tone, strongly sprung ribs, and a level topline that grants an elegant and balanced silhouette.

Coat and Colours

Its distinctive long white flocked coat is soft and straighter than the curly coats seen in close relatives like the Bichon Frise. This coat requires daily grooming to avoid mats and tangles, particularly behind the ears, on the legs, and belly. The only accepted colour is pure white without any markings, complemented by pigmentation including black nose, lips, eyelids, nails, and paw pads.

Distinctive Features

The head features a broad skull with a noticeable stop, and large, round dark eyes framed by pigmented rims, evoking an alert yet gentle look. High-set, long, pendulous ears carried away from the head provide a distinctive profile. The tail is well feathered, set at the croup level, and gracefully curves over the back. The gait is smooth and smart, with legs moving parallel at a walk, reflecting structural soundness and balance.

Gender Differences

Males are marginally taller and heavier but both genders share the same square, elegant physique and silky coat texture. Temperament differences are minimal across sexes, with individual personality traits being the main variation rather than gender-related tendencies.

Show Ring Preferences

The breed standard prioritises correct proportions, a pure white coat free from discolouration, and a calm but alert temperament. Faults such as ambling gait or dental irregularities are judged mainly on their effect on the dog’s health and welfare.

Purchasing a Bolognese puppy from a reputable UK breeder generally costs between £800 and £1,500, reflecting its rarity and quality lineage. Availability can be limited, often requiring joining a waiting list.

Initial setup expenses include essential equipment such as a quality collar, harness, leads, bowls, grooming kits, bedding, and secure playpens, typically costing an additional £150 to £250.

Ongoing monthly costs cover premium food (around £30-£40), grooming supplies or professional grooming sessions (£30-£50), and routine veterinary care including vaccinations and parasite prevention (£40-£60).

Lifelong expenses include insurance, averaging £40 to £45 monthly for comprehensive coverage, and potential veterinary costs for health issues or emergencies. Overall monthly upkeep usually ranges from £60 to £90, excluding the initial purchase price.

You can find Bolognese for sale on Pets4Homes to connect with trusted breeders and rescue options currently available in the UK.

Due to the Bolognese’s rarity and potential presence of unscrupulous sellers, careful research and vigilance are paramount when acquiring a puppy. Prioritise ethical, responsible breeders with verifiable health testing and transparent practices.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Look for breeders offering clear documentation including Kennel Club registration paperwork, health clearances, and vaccination records. Visiting the breeder’s premises to assess living conditions and meet parent dogs is highly recommended. Avoid breeders who pressure for deposits without allowing full evaluation.

Health Testing Verification

Confirm that puppies have undergone screening for patellar luxation and eye diseases, as is standard with responsible breeders participating in Animal Health Trust testing and the BVA eye schemes.

Puppy Selection Process

Assess temperament and health indicators such as alertness, activity, and cleanliness. Request information about early socialisation efforts to ensure the puppy is confident and well-adjusted.

Contract and Guarantee Review

Ensure breeders provide a written contract containing health guarantees, refund policies, and spay/neuter agreements. Watch for warnings signs like vague contracts, evasive health answers, or lack of socialisation in puppies.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Considering adoption from breed-specific rescues or shelters experienced with Bolognese dogs can also be rewarding, offering a loving home to a dog in need.

Visit find Bolognese for sale to view current listings and connect with reputable sources.

Caring for a Bolognese requires a dedicated daily routine balancing grooming, exercise, nutrition, and health observation. Maintaining their distinctive white coat demands regular grooming, ear cleaning, and nail trimming to avoid common issues.

Daily Care Routine

A typical schedule includes two 30-minute walks daily, supplemented by interactive play and mental stimulation such as puzzle toys or obedience training. Feeding is twice daily using high-quality food appropriate for the dog’s size and life stage. Regular monitoring of health and cleanliness throughout the day is recommended.

Living Environment Needs

The breed adapts well to apartment life, provided there is access to a secure garden for off-lead activity. They prefer moderate climates and indoor life close to their owners due to their social disposition. Caution is needed in extreme temperatures to avoid overheating or cold stress.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

Hydration and shade are priorities in summer, while winter requires protection from cold drafts and damp environments. The coat may need extra attention during seasonal shedding to maintain comfort and appearance.

Senior Care Adaptations

Elderly Bolognese benefit from softer bedding for joint comfort, shorter but more frequent walks, and diet adjustments to preserve energy and weight. Monitoring mobility and cognitive function helps maintain quality of life, with mental activities supporting cognitive health.

The Bolognese is exceptionally good with children, particularly those old enough to understand gentle and respectful dog interaction. Their patient, sociable nature complements family environments where they can participate in play and social activities. However, because of their small size and delicate coat, they are better suited to households with children aged over five years rather than toddlers, who might accidentally cause harm.

Age-Specific Interactions

Toddlers require vigilant supervision around a Bolognese to avoid rough handling, while older children and teenagers benefit from education on dog etiquette, which supports a positive dog-child relationship. Early socialisation also helps the dog adapt to children of all ages confidently.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Children should be taught gentle petting, respecting the dog’s space especially during rest, and recognising signs of stress or discomfort to prevent negative incidents. Structured play and shared activities encourage healthy bonds and safety for both dog and children.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Owing to their prey drive, Bolognese dogs should always be supervised around smaller pets. Gradual, careful introductions are necessary to establish harmony. Their energy level and patience make them fulfilling family pets when managed thoughtfully.

Creating Safe Environments

Supervision by adults during child-dog interactions is essential, along with providing quiet retreats for the dog. Ensuring secure garden spaces reduces risks of escape or chasing wildlife and livestock.

Although small, the Bolognese is an energetic breed benefiting greatly from regular daily exercise to preserve physical and mental health. Two walks of approximately 30 minutes each meet their physical activity requirements, enhanced by access to a secure garden for safe off-lead play.

Daily Exercise Requirements

Adult dogs usually require about 60 minutes of exercise daily, split between morning and evening sessions. Puppies need shorter, more frequent sessions with frequent rests to protect vulnerable growing joints.

Suitable Activities

The breed enjoys interactive games such as fetch, hide and seek, and beginner-level agility. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys complements physical workouts, supporting overall wellbeing.

Exercise Restrictions

Puppies should avoid extended or highly vigorous activity until reaching full maturity around 12 months old. Extreme weather conditions require precaution to prevent heatstroke or hypothermia. Given their high prey drive, off-lead exercise requires supervision.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Using treat-dispensing toys, scent games, and obedience training games keeps the Bolognese mentally engaged and less prone to behaviour issues caused by under-stimulation.

Feeding the Bolognese involves providing a balanced diet adapted to their size, age, and activity level. Puppies benefit from multiple small meals daily for growth support, while adults receive two portioned meals to maintain ideal weight.

Nutritional Requirements

High-quality commercial diets with protein content around 22-26% and fat levels 10-15% suit the breed’s sensitive digestion and coat health needs. Avoidance of fillers and artificial additives is beneficial.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Puppies start with 3 to 4 meals daily, gradually transitioning to twice daily at adulthood. Treats used during training should be limited to avoid unnecessary weight gain. Portion sizes must be adjusted based on activity and body condition monitoring.

Special Dietary Considerations

Some individuals may suffer allergies to grains or additives; hypoallergenic or limited ingredient diets can help manage these issues. Supplements such as omega fatty acids may support coat quality and joint health.

Weight Management

Maintaining an ideal body condition is crucial due to the breed’s small size, preventing obesity that can stress joints and overall health. Regular weigh-ins and vet consultations help maintain optimal weight control.

The Bolognese demands careful coat care to preserve its soft, white flocked texture free of mats and tangles. Owners should perform daily brushing focusing on vulnerable areas such as behind the ears, belly, and legs where knots commonly form. Grooming gloves or soft slicker brushes are recommended to maintain the coat’s natural feel.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

Daily brushing for 15 to 20 minutes removes loose hair and prevents matting. Bathing should be done periodically using dog-specific shampoos and conditioners designed for sensitive skin, avoiding over-bathing that may cause dryness.

Professional Grooming Requirements

Professional groomers are recommended twice yearly for coat trimming, tidying around the feet, and removing excess hair between pads. Ear cleaning and hair removal inside the ear canals help prevent infections under professional care.

Home Grooming Techniques

At home, owners should safely trim nails and coat around delicate areas using appropriate tools. Weekly ear inspections and cleaning with vet-approved products reduce infection risks. Regular dental care with specialised toothpaste and brushes is important for preventing periodontal disease.

Common Grooming Challenges

Preventing mats and knots requires diligence, especially in high-friction zones. Neglected grooming can lead to skin irritations. Seasonal increases in shedding necessitate more frequent brushing to avoid tangling and maintain coat health.

The Bolognese is considered a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Compared to many purebreds, they have relatively robust health but are prone to specific hereditary disorders that owners and breeders should be aware of.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

Common issues include patellar luxation, affecting knee stability, hip dysplasia, eye conditions screened by the BVA eye scheme, dental diseases such as periodontal disease, and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease impacting the hip joint. Prevalence varies, but regular health screenings can mitigate risks.

Genetic Testing Requirements

Responsible breeders conduct patella luxation scoring via the Animal Health Trust and participate in BVA eye testing to minimise inherited health problems. Ensuring breeding stock are free from significant genetic defects maintains breed health standards.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Puppies receive comprehensive vaccination before sale, with follow-up boosters as advised by vets. Annual health checks include parasite control and general wellbeing assessments. Spaying and neutering are recommended between six and nine months, depending on maturity. Routine dental care and weight monitoring are vital for preventing secondary health issues.

Insurance Considerations

Typical insurance claims for the breed involve routine care, minor injuries, and known breed-specific issues. UK insurance costs average around £40 to £45 per month for comprehensive lifetime coverage, influenced by policy specifics and location.

The Bolognese breed originates from northern Italy, specifically the city of Bologna, tracing its lineage back to the 11th and 12th centuries. It belongs to the Mediterranean Bichon family, sharing close ancestry with breeds such as the Bichon Frise, Lowchen, Havanese, Coton de Tulear, and Maltese. Historically, it was highly esteemed by Italian nobility during the 15th century and owned by notable figures including Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and Catherine the Great of Russia.

Early Development

The breed was developed primarily as an elegant companion dog, with breeding intentions focused on a refined white flocked coat and a sociable, gentle temperament. Artistic works from the 17th century by painters like Titian and Goya depicted dogs resembling the Bolognese, cementing its aristocratic status. Its enduring presence among European aristocracy reinforced its role as a cherished toy breed valued for both appearance and temperament.

Modern Recognition

The Bolognese arrived in Britain about 200 years ago, initially imported via the Canary Islands. Despite its long history, it remains a relatively rare breed internationally and in Italy. The British Bolognese Club was established in 1994 and affiliated with The Kennel Club in 1996 to promote breed preservation. The breed first appeared at Crufts in 2002, and in 2026 it is expected to achieve Kennel Club Championship status, enhancing its visibility within the UK dog show community.

The Bolognese is a distinguished small companion breed renowned for its striking pure white flocked coat and gentle, affectionate temperament. Originating from northern Italy, this breed perfectly combines elegance and warmth, making it an appealing choice for both city and country living. Known for high intelligence and adaptability, Bolognese dogs thrive on close human companionship, bonding deeply with their families.

Primarily bred as a companion dog, the Bolognese excels as a devoted family member rather than a working or sporting breed. Their moderate exercise needs and calm yet playful nature suit older owners or those with a relaxed lifestyle, although they also enjoy engaging activities and mental challenges. Their low-shedding coat is an advantage for those seeking a pet with reduced allergenic potential.

Despite their small stature, Bolognese dogs possess a lively and inquisitive disposition. They are highly trainable and eager to please, making them well suited to first-time dog owners. Their affectionate loyalty combined with a reserved approach around strangers adds a subtle watchdog ability while maintaining a gentle demeanour indoors.

Prospective owners should be prepared for daily grooming to maintain the breed's long white coat and provide consistent mental and physical stimulation to support wellbeing. Overall, the Bolognese is ideal for families, singles, and seniors able to offer affection, care, and attention to this elegant yet approachable companion dog.

Perfect For

Individuals or families living in flats or houses who seek a devoted and intelligent companion. Those with a less active lifestyle will appreciate the breed’s moderate exercise requirements, while owners who enjoy training or interactive play will find fulfilment in the breed’s eagerness to learn. The Bolognese also suits first-time dog owners and elderly people looking for a loyal pet with manageable daily care needs.

Key Considerations

Daily grooming is essential to maintain the coat’s soft, flocked texture and prevent matting, supplemented by professional grooming twice yearly. Mental enrichment is important to prevent boredom-driven behaviours like excessive barking. A secure garden and supervision are necessary due to the breed’s high prey drive. They are better suited to households with older children rather than toddlers given their delicate size and sensitivity to rough play.

The Bolognese is a deeply devoted companion, characterised by a blend of intelligence, loyalty, and gentleness. They thrive on active involvement in family life and form strong bonds with their owners, demonstrating a keen desire to please and a calm, affectionate nature. These traits make them ideal pets for those seeking a playful yet serene small dog.

They tend to be reserved and cautious around strangers, preferring observation over confrontation, which contrasts with many small breeds known for incessant barking. Instead, the Bolognese alerts owners with measured, subtle warnings rather than loud or constant noise, showing a quiet watchdog instinct.

Intelligence drives their need for mental stimulation; without sufficient enrichment, they may develop problematic behaviours like excessive barking or destructive activities. While closely bonded to their owners, they can tolerate reasonable periods alone without severe separation anxiety, unlike some toy breeds.

Playfulness and a mischievous charm endure throughout their lives, complemented by a high prey drive that necessitates supervision when off-lead to prevent chasing small animals.

Ranking highly in trainability, the Bolognese responds well to positive reinforcement training techniques, including treats, praise, and gentle corrections. Due to their sensitive nature, harsh training methods are counterproductive and can hamper progress.

Puppy Training Priorities

Early socialisation and crate training during the critical first six months are essential. Focus on foundational obedience commands such as come, sit, stay, heel, quiet, leave it, down, and bed. Consistent boundary setting is crucial to prevent behavioural issues often referred to as "small dog syndrome." Exposure to various people, animals, and environments fosters confident, well-rounded adults.

Training Methods That Work

Short, engaging training sessions with rewarding good behaviour using high-value treats are most effective. Consistency and patience help maintain the dog’s interest and motivation. Mental games and interactive training match the breed’s need for intellectual stimulation.

Advanced Training Potential

Given dedication, the Bolognese can excel in obedience competitions and similar dog sports demanding precision and responsiveness. Although their petite size limits strenuous physical roles, their intelligence makes them suitable for advanced training challenges.

Common Training Mistakes

Inconsistency, overindulgence in puppyhood, and inadvertent encouragement of maladaptive behaviours like excessive barking or wilfulness should be avoided. Clear rules and consistent expectations throughout early stages prevent many future difficulties.
