The domestic canary (Serinus canaria forma domestica), commonly known simply as the canary, is one of the world's most widely kept cage birds, with a history of domestication stretching back over five hundred years. Originally captured from the wild canary populations of the Macaronesian Islands — which include the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores — canaries were first brought to Europe by Spanish sailors in the late 15th century. Through centuries of selective breeding, an extraordinary range of colour, song, and feather varieties has been developed, including the Yorkshire Canary, the Gloster Canary, and the famous Roller Canary, bred specifically for the quality and softness of its song.
Canaries are predominantly kept for their melodious singing, with male birds producing elaborate, continuous songs that vary considerably by variety and individual. They are independent birds that do not require — and often do not welcome — being handled, making them better suited to bird enthusiasts who enjoy observing and listening rather than hands-on interaction. They thrive in spacious cages or aviaries with room to fly, a varied diet of quality seed mix supplemented with fresh greens and egg food, and exposure to natural light cycles to maintain their singing and moult cycles. Canaries are generally hardy, long-lived birds with lifespans of eight to fifteen years when well cared for.
