The Neapolitan Mastiff, also known as Mastino Napoletano, is one of the oldest breeds of all and originated in Italy. Although their appearance may be a little imposing and they make impressive guard dogs, they are known for their friendly and affectionate nature. They are very large and heavy dogs and have an enormous amount of loose skin around their face and neck, which combined with their ultra-dry lips gives the Neapolitan an overall forbidding appearance.

Neapolitan Mastiffs can make good family dogs, especially for families with older children, as their large size and clumsiness may not suit younger kids. They are affectionate, loyal, and protective, often described as gentle giants when properly socialised and trained. However, they require an experienced owner who can provide firm, consistent leadership due to their stubborn nature.
