The Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum) is a non-venomous colubrid snake native to North and Central America, once classified as containing up to 24 subspecies ranging from the small, drab Eastern Milk Snake to the brilliantly coloured Honduran Milk Snake and Pueblan Milk Snake. Milk Snakes are members of the kingsnake genus Lampropeltis, and many subspecies display striking red, black, and yellow or white banding that mimics the pattern of the venomous coral snake — a defensive adaptation known as Batesian mimicry. In the wild, milk snakes occupy a huge variety of habitats including forests, rocky hillsides, farmland, and grassland.
As captive animals, Milk Snakes are considered excellent pet snakes for both beginners and experienced keepers. They are manageable in size — most pet varieties reach between 60 and 120 centimetres — and generally have a calm, handleable temperament once accustomed to regular interaction. They are also hardy feeders, typically accepting frozen-thawed mice readily, which makes feeding straightforward and convenient. Milk Snakes require a thermostatically controlled vivarium with a thermal gradient of approximately 24 to 29°C, a secure hide at both the warm and cool ends, and a water bowl for soaking. Their vivid colouration and the wide variety of naturally occurring subspecies and captive-bred morphs — including albino, hypo, and tangerine forms — make Milk Snakes one of the most visually diverse and collectable snake species available to UK keepers.
