Standard Poodles usually begin to calm down around 2 to 3 years of age. While puppies and adolescents tend to be energetic and sometimes excitable, maturity generally brings a more composed and level-headed temperament.

Standard Poodles can exhibit behavior issues such as shyness or introversion if not properly socialised, which may cause them to be standoffish or nippy, separation anxiety due to their people-oriented nature, obsessive bonding with their owners, and sensitivity to their owner's mood that can lead to depression or being spoiled. Most concerns can be managed through early socialisation, consistent training, and firm but loving leadership.

The leading cause of death in Standard Poodles by organ system is gastrointestinal issues, accounting for 16.7%, while the main causes by disease are cancer at 27.1% and trauma at 10.1%. They are also prone to health conditions like Addison's disease, bloat, thyroid problems, epilepsy, Cushing's disease, sebaceous adenitis, juvenile renal disease, hip dysplasia, bladder stones and various cancers.
