Description
It is with a very heavy heart that we are looking for a new home for our lovely boy, Smokey. This has been an incredibly difficult decision for our family, and one we have not taken lightly. We love him dearly and desperately want to find him the right home where he can feel safe, settled and happy again.
Smokey is a tricolour Border Collie, born in September 2023. He is fit, healthy, neutered and fully vaccinated. He is a very intelligent boy who learns quickly, knows a range of commands, is house-trained and sleeps well through the night. When he feels comfortable, he is affectionate, loving and enjoys being close to his people.
For nearly two years, Smokey was a much-loved part of our busy family home with two young children. He enjoyed long walks, often off lead, was sociable with other dogs and loved being outdoors.
Sadly, around a year ago, something seemed to frighten him while out walking in the local woods. Since then, his anxiety has gradually worsened, despite a huge amount of time, patience and professional help. We have worked with three behaviourists and our vet, explored possible pain-related causes and tried different approaches, including medication. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get him back to the happy, confident dog he once was.
His anxiety now affects much of his daily life. He can be very nervous about going outside, particularly in the mornings, and often seeks out quiet, dark places in the house where he can feel safe. Walks on lead can be difficult, as he may freeze, pull to get home or seek shelter. He has also become reactive towards other dogs.
We also need to be completely honest about his behaviour when he is frightened. On a few occasions when extremely stressed, he has bared his teeth and caught at clothing when children have tried to cuddle him. He has also collie nipped on a few occasions when someone has reached for his collar while he was anxious. These incidents are not something we can safely manage in a home with young children, and we feel it is important that anyone considering Smokey understands his needs.
Despite all of the anxiety, we know him as a lovely, affectionate dog. We feel that our busy family home and the surrounding environment are no longer right for him, and that he deserves the chance to live somewhere better suited to his needs.
We are looking for a very special home for Smokey:
An experienced, patient owner who understands Border Collies and ideally has experience with anxious or fearful dogs.
A quiet, rural home with a secure garden and access to open fields or peaceful walking areas. (While he doesn't like our woods, he's very happy in fields).
An adult-only home, with no young children.
Someone who can give him time, space and understanding, without putting pressure on him, and who is willing to continue working with appropriate professional support.
We would love Smokey to find a home where he can enjoy the outdoors again, build trust at his own pace and simply feel safe. We know he may not be the easiest dog, and we are not looking for a quick fix or a home that expects him to change overnight. We want to give him the best possible chance of a happier life, with someone who has the time, experience and environment he needs.
If you feel you may be able to offer Smokey the right home, we would love to hear from you and have an honest conversation about him. Thank you for taking the time to read about our lovely boy.
