Description
Sometimes love isnât enough on its own⊠and this is one of those heartbreaking situations.
Oscar is a stunning 29-month-old, 31kg intact male shepherd mix, rescued from Cyprus and adopted into a loving UK home a year ago. He is deeply loved, safe, and well cared for â but sadly, his needs have outgrown what his current home can offer. With a small garden and a retired owner who is struggling to meet the exercise demands of such an athletic young dog, the difficult decision has been made to put Oscarâs wellbeing first and find him the home he truly deserves.
Oscarâs DNA shows he is mostly Malinois x Caucasian Shepherd, with some German Shepherd, and he also strongly resembles a Dutch Shepherd in both looks and character. His striking brindle coat and soulful eyes stop people in their tracks wherever he goes.
At home, Oscar is a dream. He is calm, settled and wonderfully behaved â crate trained, toilet trained, non-destructive, and with no issues around food or toys. He sleeps through the night, happily relaxes on the sofa during the day, and is affectionate with his owner, visitors and neighbours alike. He is friendly with other dogs and loves human company.
Oscar is excellent in the car and often curls up for a nap on the back seat. He can be left comfortably in the car for short periods when shopping or during appointments.
Outdoors, Oscar is an active, intelligent, and athletic country boy. He needs regular daily exercise in all weathers and thrives in open spaces where he can run, sniff, dig and explore. A large, secure, escape-proof garden and an active lifestyle are essential. He walks well on the lead and is well socialised, having experience in busy public places with both dogs and people.
Oscar has strong natural guardian instincts and will alert you if anyone approaches the property. Because of this, he is best suited to a quiet rural home with minimal passing traffic. He has lived only in peaceful environments and finds constant activity overstimulating.
He is used to being around horses and cattle, which he observes with curiosity. He is cautious around sheep and would need further careful exposure. His strongest drive is scenting, and when wildlife is present, his focus can override recall. For this reason, he currently needs to be on a lead or long line until further training is completed. He is already receiving recall training and is doing well in controlled environments, but more work is needed when distractions are high.
Oscar is still young, energetic and independent. He needs an experienced owner, ideally familiar with large working breeds, who enjoys training and engagement. Although he is good with children, his size and enthusiasm mean an adult-only home would be most suitable.
Oscar would thrive as a property guardian, and he also has huge potential for scent work or dog sports. He would love to live with another calm, stable dog who could be both a playmate and role model.
This is a truly special dog whose future could be incredible in the right hands. His potential is enormous â and with the right environment, patience and dedication, Oscar will reward his person with unwavering loyalty and companionship for life.
