Description
The Black Beauty Stick Insect (Peruphasma schultei) is a world-renowned species from the Cordillera del Cóndor in Peru, prized for its velvety matte-black body, vivid golden eyes, and brilliant crimson vestigial wings. Discovered only recently in a tiny, isolated mountain region, these midnight-black phasmids are celebrated by enthusiasts for their interactive nature and unmatched high-contrast appearance.
Adult Size & Lifespan: Males 4–5cm, females 5–6cm | Approximately 1 year
Breeding & Reproduction: Parthenogenetic (yes); eggs can be incubated in moist sphagnum moss at 20–22°C and typically take 4-6 months to hatch.
Ideal Climate: Temperature: 20–24°C (Kept at 20–22°C The EntoScapes Way) | Humidity: 60–80% (Kept at 60–70% The EntoScapes Way).
Physical Identification & Behaviour: Striking, velvety matte-black body with vivid golden eyes and brilliant crimson vestigial wings that flare during threat displays. Highly active, surface-active, and quick explorers that require secure enclosures and bark hiding spots.
Place of Origin: Native to a tiny, isolated five-hectare mountain region in the Cordillera del Condor, Peru (adapted to cooler, breezier cloud-forest conditions).
Dietary Preferences: Japanese privet (Oleaceae) is the most reliable and best-accepted food in captivity. Excellent alternative: honeysuckle (Caprifoliaceae) is another very high-quality choice. Other acceptable options: the tender leaves of jasmine and osmanthus (Oleaceae) can also be fed. Serve in fresh water jars plugged securely with paper towels or sponges to prevent accidental drowning.
Defensive Adaptations: Features the unique Schultei Defense—the ability to release a mild, smelly defensive fluid from the back of the head when actively stressed (will sting the eyes if it's a direct hit but zero lasting damage).
