Xarkas' life started in someone's small garden where he never left. He had very little human interaction, never saw other dogs and was left by himself all day.
After multiple complaints by neighbours, he was then tied on a prong collar to a tree in the garden, so the neighbours could no longer see him. He spent a long time tied up alone, and it took his owner and another relative passing away before the family finally decided to give Xarkas up.
When he arrived to the rescue he was very frightened of people and wouldn't allow anyone to touch his neck as it was so sore and sensitive from being tied on a prong collar for so long.
He has spent over two years being nursed back to health by 2nd Chance and recently we were all ecstatic to see him accept wearing a harness and go for his first ever walk, at nearly 5 years old!!
Xarkas is a very special dog, he has overcome a lot of trauma and remains largely optimistic, sweet natured and an absolute delight to be around.
Adopters will need to remember that he has lived a very sheltered life and although you would never guess that if you met him now, expectations will need to be set that he might find normal dog experiences worrying.
Xarkas is friendly with all people now and greets everyone excitedly. He loves his food, loves training, loves toys, playing and water! He finds a lot of joy in life these days and we'd love to see him being shown love in a home. He is so deserving!
Incredibly, despite his upbringing, Xarkas is OK around dogs, he doesn't appear to want to, or know how to interact and has previously politely ignored them on a walk. He would need his new adopters to advocate for him in social settings as he will find rude/ overly friendly dogs uncomfortable and will try to avoid their interactions.
Xarkas is one of a kind and deserves understanding adopters who will show him all the love and fun he has missed out on.
He is looking for an adult only home with adopters who can help continue to build his confidence and approach him with care and consideration as he may still show sensitivity to certain aspects, such as putting a harness on or being touched around the neck.
We have no doubts that Xarkas will make someone very happy and that he will give just as much love as he receives.
