Rufus is a 9-year-old rescue English Pointer who routinely proves age is just a number! Weighing roughly 20kg, he combines the playful energy and spirit of a younger dog with the polite, house-trained manners of a mature companion.
We’ve cared for Rufus over the last 4 months, watching him settle, build confidence, and show off his adorable personality. His favourite hobbies include sunbathing in the garden, running full-tilt in secure fields, stretching out completely on his back on the sofa, and keeping his favourite humans within view while he naps.
His Personality & House Manners
- Polite & Peaceful Indoors: Fully house-trained and crate-trained. He doesn't chew furniture, doesn't jump on people, and doesn't bark when someone comes to the door. When he gets excited, he simply does a fast, happy victory lap around the house!
- Downtime: Rufus is comfortably independent. Once exercised, he likes curling up in his spot with his toys. He isn't a clingy lap dog, but he feels happiest and most relaxed when you are in the same room or nearby.
- Dog Socialisation: We believe Rufus lacked early exposure to other dogs growing up, so he can lack initial social skills. If a dog enters his space suddenly or rushes up to him, he can become reactive because he hasn't had time to process his surroundings. However, when given time to observe from a distance and introduced slowly, calmly, and steadily, he settles nicely and becomes curious; as he builds his relationship with new dogs, he can then become playful and socialise well with other dogs.
- On the Walk & Recall: Rufus walks best on a harness with a long line. His recall at home and in small, enclosed spaces is great. However, in public parks or fields with distractions and wildlife, his English Pointer working drive kicks in hard. He becomes hyper-focused on scents or animals, and recall alone rarely works in these moments.
Important Considerations
- Rescue Experience Required: Rufus will do best with an adopter who has prior experience with rescue dogs and understands the patience, time, and routine required to help a dog feel secure in a new home.
- Reactivity Training & Management: Rufus needs an owner who offers patience and understanding regarding his reactivity around new dogs. He will flourish with positive, ongoing training to help manage his reactions when exposed to unfamiliar dogs, alongside controlled, gradual introductions.
- Building Public Recall: While his indoor/garden recall is reliable, he needs continued, positive training in public spaces to build on his recall around high distractions. In the meantime, keeping him safely on a long line in open public spaces is essential.
His Ideal Home
- Location: Cambridgeshire or surrounding rural/semi-rural areas.
- Garden: A large, fully enclosed garden with 6ft+ fencing where he can safely roam, stretch his legs, and sunbathe.
- Experienced & Patient Household: Owners who understand working/pointer breeds, possess rescue experience, and are committed to continuing his training with a calm, structured approach.
- Pet Setup: Best suited to a home without cats or small furries due to his natural Pointer prey drive.
Health & Vetting
- Castrated (March 2026), microchipped, up-to-date on all vaccinations and flea/worming treatments.
- Comes with an up-to-date pet passport and no known health conditions.
