It truly breaks my heart to be writing this, but I am looking for the right forever home for my beautiful Quaker parrot, Blue.
Blue is a 1.5-year-old, confirmed female with a big personality and a very clever little mind. She is tame and interactive, though like many Quakers she does form strong opinions about people and will need patience and understanding while she settles into a new home. She has always shown a preference for men, but with calm, consistent training she does improve and build trust.
She can say “step up”, “peekaboo”, and “bacon pancakes”, and she enjoys whistling too. Like most parrots, she will nip if she doesn’t trust someone yet, but this has improved greatly with training. One thing to note is that she will always try to pick at moles, spots, or skin around fingers, so awareness and gentle redirection are important.
Blue eats a balanced diet of a small amount of seed alongside daily chop, with treats given throughout the day. She loves peppers and cucumber, and her favourite training treats are sunflower hearts and hemp seeds.
We do have a cat, but they have never interacted and are kept completely separate.
This decision has been incredibly difficult. Due to changes in my work, I am no longer home as much as Blue needs, and while I try to give her 1–2 hours out of the cage daily, it’s not enough for a bird as intelligent and social as she is. In addition, we have a 6-year-old who has recently been diagnosed with ADHD, and the noise levels in our home have become overwhelming. Sadly, Blue’s natural vocalisations can cause distress, and it’s reached a point where the environment isn’t fair on Blue or my child.
Blue deserves a calmer home with someone who is around more often, has time to continue her training, and can truly enjoy her companionship. This is not a decision made lightly — it’s about doing what is best for her, even though it’s incredibly painful.
