Description

Bertie is a 23 months old male puppy; I named him after Bertie Wooster from Geeves and Wooster. He’s a friendly and playful dog, full of energy and is good with cats and other dogs. Bertie doesn’t bark, which is a massive plus. I’ve only heard him bark three times in the last two years, once when he was dreaming. He has a German (EU) passport, as we went hiking in the alps last year - I believe the passport is valid for the next three years. Why am I rehoming Bertie? —--------------------------------- It’s a combination of change of personal circumstances and Bertie not meeting my expectations - both are important for anyone wishing to enquire about Bertie. Please read the full post! Firstly, I lived in a large house with a garden, belonging to a friend, for 15 years. I got Bertie in June 2024, he was 3 months old. Late last year I moved into a one bed flat; plus my work situation will need me to work from the office more regularly. These two things combined mean I won’t be able to provide the environment and attention Bertie needs. Secondly, Bertie has a couple of traits that have been very frustrating for me - but this may not be an issue for you. The first trait is that he’s a bit on the overstimulated side and doesn’t have proper self control - which can lead him to get excitable around people and other dogs. I was able to train him to follow commands, allowing me to control his behaviour. However, this became frustrating for me because he wasn’t learning to control himself and I could see that he was resistant. The second thing is that Bertie’s a bit underweight, probably due to his natural constitution, not a serious medical reason as confirmed by the vet. He’s also always hungry and never seems to be satisfied. He developed a habit of refusing to drink water until he was given more food - as a way to control how much food he received. Again, these traits and behaviours added to my frustration. I’ve reached a point where I believe Bertie needs someone who will give him more than I can. However, I’m not in a rush to give him away to anyone - I love him and want him to have a good future. Who will I consider as a potential owner for Bertie? —------------------------------------- Someone with experience training dogs as a minimum requirement - Bertie has had a lot of training and I believe he needs consistency to keep him well behaved. There’s a risk his behaviour will regress if he’s not well handled. You’ll need to demonstrate your ability and past experience. Someone active for daily walks - I take him two 1 hour walks a day (two hours each day) and sometimes he needs more. Someone with a stable living and work situation who can afford to financially meet Bertie’s needs. A house with a large garden where Bertie has the freedom to explore and use his energy. Next steps —----------- Please note, the below is to ensure you’re committed and able to provide Bertie with a brighter future than he can have with me or someone else. - You’ll need to come to meet Bertie, we can meet in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. You can see what he looks like and how he behaves in person. - If you choose to, you can come to my flat and see where Bertie lives. - If you decide that you like him and I’m happy with you, we’ll pay you a visit at your home to see Bertie’s possible new home and see how he gets on with others in your household and what they think of him. I want him to live in a welcoming and safe home. - If I’m happy that Bertie can go and live with you, I’ll let him stay with you for a short duration and see how you and Bertie get on. I will regularly visit to see how things are progressing - my goal is to see that both you and Bertie are happy. - If I’m satisfied that you and Bertie will get along long term, I’ll hand over ownership of Bertie (Bertinus is his nickname) to you - with the condition that if for any reason you no longer want to keep him, I’ll take him back. This is to avoid him ending up in a shelter or with someone else who may not be able to provide what he needs. ONLY GET IN TOUCH IF YOU'VE READ THE WHOLE POST!
