Job vacancy: quiet home for Toto, Pekingese cross

Pekingese & Pug Hybrid

Description

Position: Full-time companion to Toto, a 4-year-old Pekingese cross with a big personality Location: A quiet home with a private, enclosed garden Hours: For life, ideally with someone around for much of the day This advert is written with a smile, but we're heartbroken to be placing it. We adopted Toto from Battersea three months ago and we would love to keep him. We've come to realise he needs more specialist training and a calmer home than we can give him. About Toto Toto is loving, kind and caring. He loves kisses, cuddles, sitting on your lap and being with his favourite human. He bonds deeply with one person and will become your shadow. He learns very quickly and can already sit, stay, give a paw, wait and hold a stay while you count to three. He's very vocal about his food and eats healthily, with a keen interest in fruit and vegetables on the side. He loves his morning and evening walks. He's very relaxed on public transport and in the car, and is comfortable on trains and the tube. Toto is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. A glimpse of who he can be Toto recently stayed at a pet hotel while we got married, and he was a different dog from the one we see at home. He played with other small dogs, ran around, made new friends, chatted to the staff and kissed their feet in reception. He absolutely loved it. That's a big part of why we feel our home isn't the right environment for him. What he finds hard Please read this part carefully. - He doesn't like new people approaching him. - He has nipped friends of ours who crossed his boundary when he was overwhelmed. - He has bitten a neighbour before, after taking a treat from them. That was our fault, not his. We didn't understand his behaviour then, and now that we do, we wouldn't put him in that situation again. - He becomes agitated around babies and children. - He has a history of lead frustration and tends to lunge at mopeds because of the noise. Battersea told us that he has slipped his harness, chased people and nipped their ankles when overwhelmed. - He isn't keen on larger dogs. - He barks excessively when left alone. - Noise from neighbours unsettles him, even in a fairly quiet home like ours. The ideal candidate - Works with dogs, for example as a behaviourist, trainer, vet or in dog boarding or daycare, or has similar hands-on experience - Will continue his training using positive reinforcement, at his pace - Lives alone, or in a very calm adult-only household, as two or more people can overwhelm him - Has few visitors and no children living in or regularly visiting the home - Has no other dogs at home, as Battersea advised he should be the only dog, though he can enjoy the company of small dogs elsewhere - Lives somewhere truly quiet, with little noise from neighbours and a secure, private garden - Has the time and energy to invest in him, and to help him learn to cope when left alone What you'll get in return A beautiful, devoted little dog who, in the right home, can finally settle and be himself. How to apply Please message us with answers to the questions below. We read every reply carefully, and detailed answers help us to know whether you and Toto might be a good match. 1. What is your experience with dogs, and do you work with them professionally? If so, what do you do? 2. Have you lived with a dog that has bitten, or helped one with fear or reactivity? What did you do? 3. Who lives in your home, and how often do you have visitors? Do children ever visit? 4. Do you have any other pets? 5. What type of home do you live in, and how much noise do you hear from neighbours or outside? 6. Do you have a private, fully enclosed garden? How high is the fencing? 7. What does your typical day look like, and how long would Toto be left alone? 8. How would you help Toto with his barking when he's left alone, and his lunging on walks? 9. Do you have a behaviourist, trainer or vet you would work with? 10. How would you cover the cost of his care, including any training and vet bills? 11. Would you be happy for us to visit your home and speak to a professional referee? 12. If things didn't work out, what would you do? Would you contact us first? We'll want to speak with you, meet you more than once and introduce you to Toto gradually. We'll share everything we know about him, including his history from Battersea. Finding the right person matters far more to us than finding someone quickly.
