Description
We are looking for a very special and experienced home for a long-haired white/cream Chihuahua, approximately 7–8 years old.
He is a little dog with a big personality and needs someone who understands that he comes with some challenging behaviours. He has a known bite history, and any potential new owner must be completely aware of and comfortable with this.
His biting is generally triggered when he feels uncomfortable, frustrated or doesn't want something to happen. For example, he may bite when being picked up, having a harness put on, having his paws handled or being asked to do something he doesn't want to do. He can go several days or even a week without an incident and then bite over something that may seem relatively minor.
Because of this, he is not suitable for an inexperienced dog owner. He needs someone with experience of dogs with behavioural issues, ideally someone familiar with Chihuahuas or other small dogs who can be sensitive to handling. His new owner will need to be calm, confident and patient, while also being able to provide clear and consistent boundaries.
He currently lives with an older disabled lady who, understandably, has become increasingly nervous of handling him because of his unpredictable biting. We feel he would be much better suited to someone who has the confidence, experience and time to understand his triggers and work with him at his own pace.
He needs a quiet, calm home with no other pets, where there is plenty of time to allow him to settle without being pressured. He isn't a dog who should be forced into interactions or expected to immediately tolerate handling. Building trust with him will take time, patience and consistency.
He is also a typical Chihuahua in many ways – he can be very vocal and will bark at most things! He hasn't regularly been left alone for some time, so we cannot say how he would currently cope with this. His new owner would need to be prepared to gradually work on alone-time training rather than expecting him to immediately be comfortable being left.
This isn't a dog for somebody simply looking for a small, easy companion. He needs an experienced person who is willing to genuinely commit to him, understand his behaviour and give him the time and space he needs. A calm environment, patience, consistency and realistic expectations are essential.
In the right hands, we hope he can build a trusting relationship with someone who understands that his behaviour won't change overnight and is prepared to work with him rather than against him.
Full disclosure about his behaviour and bite history will be given to anyone genuinely interested. Finding the right home is far more important than finding him a home quickly.
