Description

Hi, this is a difficult post to make so please be kind. I am going to be very upfront. Firstly, I am only looking for an extremely experienced cat owner, ideally someone who has experience with cats with behavioural issues or someone who is a vet. This cat cannot live with other cats, small children or small pets. I’m unsure about larger pets, but I’d rather not chance it. This is Nori. He has been my sweet baby since he was a tiny kitten. He is an incredibly affectionate cat and I adore him with my whole heart. He loves sleeping on my chest, doing biscuits, licking my face. He loves when you baby talk him and his favourite game is macaroni (throwing an uncooked piece of macaroni on tiled floor) or playing with a tinfoil ball. He is such a sweet, gentle, loving boy when he is doing well. However, ever since Nori was a kitten, he would have these random moments of attacking. Back then, he would mostly be triggered by bare legs, me walking to the bathroom at night etc. He did draw blood multiple times (with his teeth too). I thought Nori just needed a friend to play with, so I got cat 2. Things were fine for a while - cat 2 is a boy, he’s strong, he could protect himself and fight back and it put Nori off attacking as much. One day, I found a pregnant stray cat (cat 3) and I took her in. Again, things were fine for a while. Cat 3 was extremely affectionate, she was the sweetest girl ever. She became Nori’s outlet though, being much smaller and shy / skittish. I tried redirecting his attention, time outs, separating them and reintroducing but each time, Nori would go back to exhibiting extreme aggression towards cat 3 and sometimes to cat 2. Now, cat 3 has become a shell of herself. She is terrified of both cats, she sleeps all day and doesn’t leave her safe spots. I can’t continue like this for the wellbeing of my other cats. And yes, I have gone to the vet. Nori is perfectly healthy as far as I am aware- he has been like this since he was a kitten. He is neutered. He is an indoor cat and he has been allowed outside in the past too. He has been on Prozac / fluoxetine. The first two weeks of lethargy were fantastic, then he felt better and went right back to normal. He has been on gabapentin which did not affect him. Now he is on clomicalm. The first week, again, was great. Now, the signs of his aggression are back. I don’t think medicine will help him. From what I have researched, it is possible that he was separated from his mum and siblings too soon, so he didn’t learn bite inhibition. He also seems to have a high predatory drive. I am no expert though, and even the vets are completely puzzled. What his behaviour issues look like: As I mentioned, he is an extremely sweet cat. There have been times where he didn’t attack for weeks, maybe even a month or two. It seems like a switch is suddenly flipped and he has the urge to bite. It’s like seeing a completely different cat. He can be making biscuits on my chest one moment, then jump off the bed and lunge at cat 3 just because she’s there, biting and not letting go even when she’s screaming. If you try to interfere, he will bite you too. As you can imagine, I have gotten a good amount of injuries from him. I don’t mind him biting me- the cuts heal. I just don’t want him traumatising the other cats. If it wasn’t for them, I would be more than willing to keep him. What works: - Putting a thin blanket on him to calm him down - Putting him in another room for a time out How to tell he’s about to attack: his tail starts flicking and he is laser focused on whatever it is he wants to bite. He may even yowl. If you have read this far and it somehow hasn’t completely terrified you and you feel like you are the right fit for Nori, please get in touch with me. I am still considering my options. The vet said we could try doing a brain scan to see if there is something up there that isn’t quite right. The option of behavioural euthanasia has come up too, but that is not something I’m willing to consider. His quality of life can and has been great aside from these short attacks. I have hope that there IS something or someone out there that can help him. Even if you have any bit of advice, please get in touch. Nori’s likes: - untamed cat food - Martha's cat pillows - fluffy blankets - tunnels - uncooked macaroni - tinfoil balls - cat trees - gentle head pets, chin scratches, kisses on the face and paws - looking out of the window - catnip - cat grass - whipped cream & ice cream Dislikes: - loud noises - any other meat besides chicken You can pick him up, trim his nails, etc. He is not dangerous in that sense. Like I said, it just seems like a switch flips at the most random times and it is unsafe to have other pets around him. Thank you if you have cared to read this far.
