Pair of 10-month-old male rats looking for an experienced home.
These two boys are around 10 months old. One is a brown rex and the other is brown smooth-haired. I originally got them from a private individual who had rescued them as babies. They have had no health issues and are a bonded pair. They are almost always snuggled together in their hammocks and spend most of their time hanging out together.
Romeo is the more dominant of the two and they occasionally have a little tussle, but nothing serious and they get along well overall.
I feel awful about rehoming them. I took them on with the intention of bonding them with my older rats, but I just didn’t have the confidence to go through with the bonding process, so that didn’t happen.
When I took them on I had been told they were well handled and well socialised, but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case and they were very nervous about handling. I have been using the patience method and spending time building their confidence and encouraging them to come to me for treats. They are curious and friendly in that they will come to see me when they hear me and will happily take treats from my hand. They will also climb out of the cage when I am there to get treats.
They absolutely love free-roam time and will race around the room exploring everything. They are very curious and enjoy investigating (and chewing!) everything they can find. They have managed to chew through the plastic base of a cage twice, so they really do need a full metal cage setup.
They are currently living in a double Coco Large cage with lots of hammocks and enrichment. They use a litter tray for poo and wee on puppy pads, which I change every other day.
I feel like I’m letting these boys down as I don’t feel confident enough with handling to give them the level of interaction they deserve. Because I didn’t bond them with my other pair, they have to have separate free-roam time, which limits the time they can spend out of the cage.
I would really love them to go to a home with someone experienced with rats who has the time and confidence to continue taming them and can offer them more free-roam time and attention.
