Description

Dexter is an 11kg, 7-year-old miniature Cockapoo and, in the most affectionate possible sense, an absolute loose unit. He is a lovable rogue. Determined, ridiculous, food-obsessed, cuddle-driven and absolutely convinced that the world should revolve around him. His perfect day involves a long walk through the woods or along a beach, finding something disgusting to sniff, followed by an afternoon on the sofa with his human. Preferably touching you at all times. If you’re looking for a dog who will become your shadow, Dexter is your guy. He loves people. He’s incredibly trusting, affectionate and fiercely loyal to the people he considers his own. He wants to be involved in everything you’re doing and will deploy extraordinarily effective puppy eyes whenever he feels he’s not receiving his fair share of attention. He’s also seven years old, knows exactly who he is, and has opinions. Dexter likes humans and animals with manners. He doesn’t enjoy having his personal space invaded and, while he’s surprisingly wonderful around tiny babies who don’t move much, toddlers and children are simply too unpredictable for him. He currently lives with two very young children who absolutely adore him — our daughter’s second word was “Dexter” — but their idea of loving him involves chasing him, cuddling him and covering him in stickers. His idea of loving them is preferably from several feet away. He’s also unpredictable around other dogs, particularly bigger dogs. Some days he’s perfectly happy to meet them; other days he’d simply rather they left him alone. There isn’t an obvious trigger or pattern — that’s just Dexter. For those reasons, we are looking for an adult-only home with no other pets. Dexter is fully house-trained, non-destructive (soft-toy ears notwithstanding) and knows his basic commands. He’s extremely food-motivated, so despite being seven he’s very trainable and more than willing to learn new tricks if there’s something edible in it for him. His recall is generally very good. Unless, of course, he’s detected an abandoned sandwich, in which case we wish you the very best of luck. He needs a good long walk every day and is noticeably calmer and happier when he’s had one. He’s a barker and can howl when left alone, although he can be left for up to around six hours when necessary. He would be happiest with someone who is around a lot and actively wants a companion rather than a dog who quietly gets on with his own thing. There are a few important Dexter rules. He’s very food-driven and will resource-guard particularly high-value food, so we don’t give him bones or large treats that can’t be eaten immediately. Food left within reach is Dexter’s food, regardless of what you may previously have believed about its ownership. He also absolutely refuses to have his feet touched. Dexter communicates very clearly through growling if he is uncomfortable, wants you to stop touching him or needs some space. If that warning is repeatedly ignored he may put his mouth on you, but he has never bitten anyone and has no bite history. He simply needs an owner who understands and respects canine boundaries rather than expecting him to tolerate everything. Health-wise, he’s neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated. He has minor hip dysplasia, which doesn’t currently cause him pain but means we avoid things like repeatedly throwing balls into the air for him to jump and catch. He takes no medication and has no known allergies. Why are we rehoming him? This is the bit we wish we didn’t have to write. Dexter has been a huge part of our family and we love him enormously. But our family has changed. We now have two very young children who adore him, and we’ve realised that the increasingly noisy, chaotic, hands-on life of a house with small children isn’t the life Dexter enjoys. We could keep asking him to tolerate it. But we don’t think that’s fair. Dexter is a brilliant companion who still has many years ahead of him, and we’d rather those years were spent having long walks, taking up too much room on someone’s sofa and receiving the ridiculous amount of one-on-one attention he believes he deserves. His dream home Honestly? Somewhere quieter. Country or seaside would be the dream, with plenty of space and great walks nearby. No children and no other pets. Someone — or a couple — who is around a lot, understands dogs, respects their boundaries and actively wants a four-legged shadow. We’re not asking for a rehoming fee. We’re asking for the right home. We’d want to meet any prospective new owner, spend some time together and visit their home before making a decision. We’re in absolutely no rush to hand Dexter over to the first person who asks. Finding the right person matters far more to us than finding someone quickly. He’s complicated. He’s hilarious. He’s occasionally an enormous pain in the arse. And he’s incredibly loved. We just think there might be someone out there whose life suits him better than ours does now.
