Description
It's with great happiness that I compose this post and declare Leo ready for his forever home.
Leo came to me around 10 months ago. He was surrendered by his previous owners with severely clipped wings, on an all seed diet, with several behavioural issues and with lots of signs of mistrust, i.e. - biting!
In his time with me, Leo has proved to be a very intelligent, calm and regal parrot. He does not like being mishandled but is extremely joyful to be around once a bond of trust is established.
Leo has been changed into a 'Chop' breakfast, which is a mix of fruits, grains, pulses and veggies and has Harrisons pellets for dinner. Seeds and nuts has been used in abundance for training and building a connection with him.
Leo now steps up feet-first, is and expert at target training, is very happy to return to his cage with a lift from his human and with a nut as a reward and is currently excelling at stationing and recall training. He has come a long way with being a proficient flyer, considering he came to me as a baby with clipped wings and zero confidence in his wings.
Leo is a very tolerant, calm, curious and charming parrot. As is common with his breed, he is not the most cuddly bird and doesn't like being handled in the petting sense, but he is usually very happy to be perched on your shoulder and go with you about your day. He enjoys his free time out of the cage and will usually be found chewing his wooden toys to shreds, foraging for treats or preening his long tail feathers.
Leo has been extensively socialised and has regained a lot of trust in humans. This, plus a solid step-up routine, makes for a bird that is easy to handle in all situations.
He has started to find his voice, and as is common with the breed, seems like he will be a proficient talker/mimicker. He has started to mimic vocal human sounds (mostly because he has learned that this gets my immediate attention) and does a great impression of a cat, when he feels like it, of course.
Male alexandrines have the potential to be great talkers and even learn contextual words or phrases, allowing you to have an actual conversation with your parrot or get an honest answer to a question. This can be especially powerful when encouraged and rewarded from such a young age and with a great human-parrot bond, as they are more likely to mimic you if they see you as their flock.
As an experienced parrot handler and trainer I would be more than happy to provide information and support on how to maintain his learned behaviours, carry on the training that he is currently undergoing and begin training new behaviours and tricks.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you believe you are Leo's forever home.
As many viewings as needed are welcome before the rehoming happens and I will be happy to provide support for the settling in period.
