Swordtails Fish for sale in the UK

Swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii), also known simply as swordtail fish, originate from the freshwater rivers and streams of Central America, including Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. These vibrant fish are easily recognised by the male's distinctive elongated lower tail fin, resembling a sword. Males typically measure 10-15 cm, while females are larger and lack the sword-like tail extension. Through selective breeding, a spectacular range of colours and patterns has been developed, including red, orange, yellow, and black varieties. The swordtail fish is active and generally peaceful but can display mild territorial aggression, especially among males. It’s advisable to keep more females than males to avoid conflicts. They thrive in well-maintained aquariums of at least 20 gallons with neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH 7.0-8.0) and temperatures around 22-26 °C. Dense plants and open swimming spaces enhance their environment. Known for being hardy and easy to breed, the swordtails for sale in the UK market appeal to both beginner and experienced aquarists alike. Their omnivorous diet includes flakes, pellets, and occasional live foods, making them manageable for community tanks. Always provide excellent filtration and regular water changes to ensure their health and vibrancy.
